He'd leave a room having been talking to the killer, then come back in and say "Oh, just one more thing..." and then nail him while he was off-guard. Which raises an important point - did Columbo the character have a glass eye, or was the glass eye playing the part of a real eye? Its things like this that keep me awake at night.
