The Ring

I saw a commercial for a new horror movie called The Ring. Now I believe that there's an Japanese horror movie also called The Ring.

I was wondering if anyone knew if these two movies have anything in common with each other or if it's an american remake of the Japanese movie.

The Ring is an American remake of the Japanese horror film Ringu. Why they didn't just release the Japanese version here is beyond me (other than North American stupidity).

The Japanese version is a great film, hopefully the remake won't be a turdburger.

Half the fun of Ringu was the quiet Japanese way of building the movie, I can't see it working with a bunch of American Teen Actors (I'm not sure who's in it so if anyone can tell me I'd appreciate it) who knows maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised

Well it's not being sold as a teen horror movie so there's hope. All the previews are making it look like more of an "intelligent horror" movie so there's no reason to expect just another dumb "teen horror".

Naomi Watts is the lead actress and i guess she was one of the main girls in Mulholland Drive.

The only name i recognize is Brian Cox who of course played Hannible before Sir Anthony Hopkins.

MY GOD THAT WILL SUCK

Ring(the Japanese Version, is AWESOME, and never should have been re-made (although thats what i said about Insomnia)

Advance reports on the movie make it sound really good.

I don't hate the idea of a remake as much as you guys, either. Let's face it, damn near NOBODY watches modern Japanese horror movies. Even some of my fellow movie buffs couldn't care less about them. They're damn hard to find in stores (I still haven't come across Pulse or The Cure). It's not like Insomnia, when every Blockbuster across the land had it in their foreign film section. Go ahead and remake it. Just remake it well.

Yea, the only sad thing is most moviegoers will look at it as a Feardotcom rip-off instead of the sad truth that its the other way around.

I hope somebody licenses Ringu and puts it out on DVD over here, even if it is just to "cash in" on the American remake, I'd love to see it.

At least they're not remaking Battle Royale...

If they remake Battle Royale then I would get upset because I can imagine Hollywood totally butchering that

Well i doubt you'll have to worry about that.

I haven't even seen Battle Royale and i know that there will never be a Hollywood remake of it. The only way that Holywood would allow a remake of Battle Royale to be released is if the movie was changed so much that it becomes a totally different movie instead of a remake.

The only way an American remake of Battle Royale would exist is if it was done as an Indy film. And in that case since it would mainly be seen at "Art house" theaters they would probably just import copies of the original and give them a theater release.

ive been reading about it forever

I refuse to see this movie.

Not just cause I hate remakes.

But because I'm 99% certain it will suck. And I'm 100% certain it won't be as good as the original.

I just checked Ebay and they have it and Ring. Both are from the same guy and he has good prices with 9000+ feedback.

Battle Royale at Ebay

Ring at Ebay

The DVD's that guy is selling are bootlegs, so be careful. The quality on them is most likely shit, assuming they even work.

I got my Battle Royale DVD from eBay, but it's the legit Tartan Video region 0 special edition. That is the only official region 0 DVD of the film. Tartan is based out of the UK. Any other region 0 versions you see besides the Tartan one is a bootleg.

Well, that's good to know.

By the way is there anything that identifies it as an official release? The Tartan Video boxes look the same as all the others.

No, there is a difference. Look at the cover on the bootleg selling on eBay, then check out the cover for the legit one here.

The one I have is the Progressive Scan CIII Edition. All the rest are region 2 or 3.

Alright yeah i see the difference. I looked more yesterday and found that it also has Tartan Video written at the top.

Thanks for the info.

I also found a site that's selling the official release, It's called dvdasian.com. You know anything about that site CHUD? It looks like an legit site, but was just seeing if you've heard anything.

Ring isn't "technically' a remake. They didn't take the other movie and remake it. They are both made from the same novel. So if you look at it in that way, hell, they're both remakes of the book. The Maltese Falcon novel was turned into a movie 3 times but nobody calls John Huston's 41 version a "remake" of the first two versions, it's simply a movie adapted from the same book as those other 2.

I've heard of the site, but I don't know much about it. $30 isn't a bad price, I paid about the same on eBay. If shipping is decent, you should grab it.
