The Tuesday Comics and Comic-Related TV/Movies News

for the week beginning 09/16

WTF?! of the week: There are rumours of Fox making American Idol: The Movie. This is not a good thing, as the Idol creator is Simon Fuller, who gave us Spice World. Apparently, this movie would be in the same vein. I believe that Simon is also developing an S Club movie, which might be slightly better, but should be reworked so that Rachel Stevens gets all of the screen time.

Song of the Week: "I Get Around" by the Beach Boys, in honour of Ben "The Mimbo" Affleck and J-Ho and their upcoming baby. Haven't these Hollywood types heard of protection?

Survivor: Thailand starts this Thursday. There are apparently new games and challenges, though apparently (and thankfully) none of them involve preteen boys. I'll be rooting for Shii Ann Huang since she be representin', but to be honest she probably won't do as well as the previous Chinese competitors on reality game shows (Dorothy won Mole 2, Curtis came 3rd in Big Brother, and Allen was 3rd in No Boundaries).

Comics

DC/Wildstorm/Vertigo

- Newsarama has an interview with Andy Diggle about Lady Constantine as well as his Judge Dredd/Aliens crossover for 2000AD.

- Longtime DC employee Denny O'Neill had a heart attack last week. You can send cards to him at:

1700 Broadway

Marvel

- Chris Ryall at Movie Poop Shoot weighs in on the U-Decide competition. Who does he think is the winner? Hint: it's not Bill Jemas...

- John Romita, jr's creator-owned project will be called The Gray Area (Newsarama)

- ...and continuing that theme, Tim Sale and Jeph Loeb's next Marvel miniseries will be Hulk: Gray, as reported sometime earlier this year. But what I REALLY want to see is Speedball: Multi-Coloured Polka Dots. (Newsarama)

- Marvel's President and CEO Peter Cuneo will retire at the end of the year. Check out the press release here. (Newsarama/Marvel)

- The Pulse has some quick interviews with X-Statix artist Mike Allred and FF writer Mark Waid.

Others

- Newsarama's Omnibus has some quick items about John Byrne's sure-to-be-a-bestseller Generations 3, Darrick Robertson, Rags Morales, Micronauts, and Andy Park.

- There's also a Comic Shop News article up on Crux with writer Chuck Dixon. Nothing really earth-shattering, just the usual "CrossGen is different than the other companies", "my artist is great" verbage. Whatever, I'm still not all that interested in CrossGen. (Newsarama/CSN)

- Image has gone exclusive with Diamond for thet distribution of it's TPBs. Not surprisingly, they were the last large publisher to sign a deal.

- CrossGen is changing the size of thier Edge and Forge compendium TPBs to 5 3/8" x 8 3/16", which is about the size of a leaf of paper folded in half (5.5"x8.5"). CrossGen calls it "good value", since it's 192 pages and $7.95. I call it bad for the eyes. Don't be surprised if CrossGen announces a partnership with LensCrafters later this year... (Newsarama)

- For you Dawn fans, The Art of Joseph Michael Linsner HC should be out in stores now, retailing for about 40 bucks. Also, a new Dawn series should be out in 2003. Since it'll be published by Image, take that info with a few grains of salt... (Newsarama)

- Dark Horse will have a sequel to it's noir-ish Nevermen series. Newsarama has more information here.

- Artist Mike Leeke, who you may remember from various Valiant comics, will be the regular penciller of Future Comics' Freemind starting with #4, while Dick Giordano moves over to Deathmask. Well, it may outsell Generations 3, I guess... (Comics Continuum)

Television

- Some of the creators of X-Men Evolution will be appearing at the Los Angeles Comic Book and Science Fiction Convention on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 2pm PDT. The people appearing are producer Boyd Kirkland, story editor Greg Johnson, director Frank Paur, director/character designer Steve Gordon and creative executive/writer Craig Kyle. (Comics Continuum)

- ABC has a special this Wednesday at 10pm EDT on Christopher Reeve, with updates on his status and stuff. When does the new TV season start again? (Comics Continuum)

- Enterprise has it's season premiere on Wednesday, so there's a good chance that they'll make Joelene Blaylock show some skin. If not, you'll have to wait until November sweeps.

- The Clocktower has spoilers for Birds of Prey, if you're so inclined to look. (Dark Horizons)

Movies

- The Sept 10th update at Dark Horizons has a snippet about Blade III. Apparently Luke Goss' uber-vampire baddie reappears in the movie. Hey, if Whistler can return from the dead, why not, eh?

- Producer Roger Corman plans to make an action comedy called Captain Justice, which is written and will be directed by Victoria Lakeman. Apparently a criminal poses as a kid's favourite comic book superhero. The budget is listed at $3 million. (Movie Poop Shoot)

- Brett Ratner says that Superman is "definitely next" for him, which sucks for McG but is great news for the rest of us. Latest rumours have Sir Anthony Hopkins as Jor-El and Ratner has said that Keanu Reaves will NOT be the Man of Steel. (Dark Horizons/Coming Attractions)

- A Star Trek: Nemesis trailer will be aired sometime during Enterprise. Remember it's an even-numbered movie, which means that it's not supposed to suck. We'll see. (FilmForce)

Places I normally get this shit from: C.H.U.D., Comics Continuum, Dark Horizons, IGN Filmforce, Movie Poop Shoot, Newsarama, Pulse, theForce.net

Oh most definitely.

Song of the Week: "I Get Around" by the Beach Boys, in honour of Ben "The Mimbo" Affleck and J-Ho and their upcoming baby. Haven't these Hollywood types heard of protection?

Is this confirmed? I already hate the child.

Survivor: Thailand starts this Thursday. There are apparently new games and challenges, though apparently (and thankfully) none of them involve preteen boys.

Goddamn it. I want to see those contestants survive unprotected sex with a few Thai citizens.

- Enterprise has it's season premiere on Wednesday, so there's a good chance that they'll make Joelene Blaylock show some skin. If not, you'll have to wait until November sweeps.

Word on the street (well.....from AICN) is that it will be Hoshi showing skin. GOOD. I'd actually take her over the Vulcan anyway.

- The Sept 10th update at Dark Horizons has a snippet about Blade III. Apparently Luke Goss' uber-vampire baddie reappears in the movie. Hey, if Whistler can return from the dead, why not, eh?

I'd like to go on record and say I hope they make Blade 3 through 20. I'm always up for an hour and a half of vampire kung fu.

If they're gonna go vamp-fu then they should bring back Donnie Yen. I mean, Snipes isn't too bad at the martial arts but Yen (like Jackie Chan, Jet Li and Bruce Lee) kicks some ass at it.

Blade, I could watch a few times before getting completely bored by it.

Blade 2 was good once. I had no desire to watch it again.

At best, I think Blade 3 will be good for one viewing. Unless they cook up a bit better plot than, "Uhm...even eviller, more powerful vampires that Blade has to spend 98 minutes killing."

The best action movies are ones you can watch over and over again, because of characters and plot. Blade 2 was lacking in that department.
