Guest gthureson Report post Posted September 18, 2002 http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story2&nci...eu/france_papon Now most countries have a provision similar to this, but I would have to think that most of them instituted such a provision for people serving terms for crimes such as fraud, embezzlement, and other crimes that did not involve sending people to Auschwitz. "The former official fled to Switzerland after his conviction, but was arrested and began serving his sentence in October 1999. Last year, he wrote in a letter to France's justice minister that he felt neither "regrets or remorse" for his acts. " My opinion on this matter, especially in light of that letter, would be to let the guy rot in prison. Sick? Tough shit. Health failing? Oh well. You got away with it for fifty years. You've got to pay the piper at some point. I don't blame French Jewish groups for being pissed over this one. Took them til 1998 to be able to get the guy convicted, and he serves less than 3 years for deporting 1690 people to Auschwitz. A humanitarian release never even should have been considered.
