Guest gthureson Report post Posted September 20, 2002 Just wondering if there enough people who play any type of minature wargaming to get any kind of discussion going. I play Warhammer 40K, though I am starting to get out of it due to the price of GW products and a certain lack....well, a je ne c'est quois about the rules. I've started getting into WWII 1/72 minatures, and am currently looking for a set of solid rules for them. My Panzer Division is slowly coming together, even if the Soviet force that will be fighting them is rather slow coming together. People will have to use my smattering of British to fight them for a little while. But I am also considering picking up some plastic Ancient stuff, like Romans and Carthiginians, so if anyone knows of good rules for that as well, that'd be cool. Course, if no one else plays, this thread will of course die a lonely death.
Guest DrTom Report post Posted September 20, 2002 I used to play WH40K a lot (Tzeentch all the way, baby), but now I hardly get to play at all anymore. The price is a motivating factor, though I probably have about 2500-3000 points worth of stuff, about half of it unpainted, and half of that unassembled. Blood Bowl remains my favorite GW game, actually. The people I know who play WWII games tend to use the Battleground system, from Easy Eight. Advanced Squad Leader is out there, too, though it's a lot more esoteric, and the rulebooks are a lot more expensive.
Guest gthureson Report post Posted September 20, 2002 I've been using a barebones rule system a friend of mine bought at a con once, and sort of ad-hoc'ing some ASL on top of it, along with borrowing a few things from GZG's StargruntII rules. I'm hoping to find someone who has used the Panzermarsch rules, as they look decent, but I have yet to hear a real detailed assessment of it. I still have some Marine and Sisters to paint up, but I probably have enough 40K to last me until Games Workshop realize they are pricing themselves out of their target markets. 3000 some odd points of Marines and 2500 of Sisters is enough for any games I play. Though I should sit down and do some repair work to the casualties of gravity soon.
Guest monkey Report post Posted September 21, 2002 Someone else realises the genius of Blood Bowl. Although I own most of the old GW stuff BB is the only game I still pull out and play. My friends tried to work out how many hours we had spent playing this game and it came to a scary figure. As for the others after buying three editions of Warhammer Fantasy Batlle I had had enough and wont buy any more. Spacehulk was always fun though
Guest gthureson Report post Posted September 22, 2002 The local GW shill store has a few boxes of Blood Bowl minatures, and I keep thinking about picking up a box, but I don't think I'd get much more use out of them than my Mordheim ones. You know, play for awhile, and then, "Well, we've sorta exhausted what you can do with that game." Which is why I'm trying to get a couple of WWII armies together. Its easy to get people into, 'cause everyone knows some basics about the war and the sides, and damn it, lots of the stuff just looks cool. If only I could find more half-tracks and scout cars, my Panzer Division would be a bit more historically accurate. Its not an ideology thing, the German stuff just looks better. Guest DrTom Report post Posted September 23, 2002 The thing is, Blood Bowl is never the same game twice. Even if you play with the same two teams, the addition of the Random Play cards from the Death Zone expansion always add something to the game. Also, there are a lot of teams in production that are pretty easy to get, and rules for more can be found on the net. I still break out Blood Bowl and play it every now and again, but we're unable to get a reliable league going here. The last one we did that played all the way thru was three years ago. I played Orcs for the first time, went undefeated, and led the league in most points scored, fewest points allowed, and most casualties. It's a LOT of fun, and it's a much smaller initial investment than other GW games. You can probably find the basic set and Death Zone on Ebay for a good price, and it would certainly be worth it.
