Battlefield 1942

I am a huge mark for online first person shooters, especially war shooters. I play Day of the Defeat quite often. I've heard some promising stuff about the latest WWII online shooter Battlefield 1942. Supposedly you can use tanks, planes and stuff like that, as well as standard guns while on foot.

This sounds good and all, but has anyone actually played it? I just want to know if it runs well and how reliable the game engine is.

I got it. I don't like it nearly as much as Allied Assault or Wolfenstein's multiplayer modes. I guess it works OK but it doesn't blow my socks off. What's weird is that even when you play the singler player version you still get lag. It actually seems like there is more lag on single than multi. I don't think the engine is nearly as good as either one of those games mentioned above.

Multiplayer can get annoying because it ends up with everybody on your team fighting each other over the planes or tanks or whatever. Like you run up to a plane trying to get in and all of a sudden your teammate shoots you in the back and takes off in the plane. And if you don't have a tank or something you're going to die quick because everybody else has one. The rifles and whatnot seem weak too. You can't hit a thing with the machine gun and it takes 2-3 shots from a sniper rifle to kill anybody.

The plane isn't even fun either. It's impossible to control I think. I don't know if you've ever tried to fly a plane with the mouse, but it's not very easy to me.

I also enjoy games that have goals you have to accomplish. Like in AA missions where you have to get to the Axis' gun and blow it up. Or in Wolfenstein where you have to steal Axis' papers and get to the radio to trasmit them. Things like that. On Battlefield it's purely just kill the other team until all their lives are gone. That just doesn't give me much replay value.

The game is OK. But that's it. It's not all that. It's not nearly as good as I expected it to be. I'll probably play it off and on for a couple of weeks then go back to Allied Assault or Wolfenstein.

What's Day of the Defeat? Never heard of it.

Day of Defeat is a WWII based mod for Half-Life. Although the game engine is dated, it's still a lot of fun. You can select different classes etc. It's free if you have the full version of Half-Life.

You can find out more about it here.
