Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted September 21, 2002 Okay list what you think is probably the most greatest guitar solo's ever that really changed music in a big way. Led Zeppelin: Stairway to Heaven. Even if its an overrated piece of shit solo, this mindless classic captured a lot of fans on how a guitar solo can be played. Easy yet so good...but overrated. Van Halen: Euruption. The first real shredding guitar solo, man that is music to my ears. Lynard Skynard: Freebird. Not a band you really expect up here, but when you listen to the song, and when you hear both guitarist trading back and forth on the solo's, its a trademark in a lot of dual lead guitarists such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Megadeth, Metallica and others. Jimi Hendrix: Well almost any song by him would do, he made the damn guitar so popular. David Gilmour: Time. Why Time? Whammy Bar anyone? this guy used it like nothing else, made the guitar sound so different, yet so powerful. Iron Maiden: Trooper (Rock in Rio version). Dude triple lead guitars, triple harmonizing. Has it ever been done before? Not too sure if Skynard or some other band did it. now these might not be the best, but these have probably changed the guitar solo's forever (well maybe not Iron Maiden's but that is an exception)
Guest GeneMean Report post Posted September 21, 2002 Van Halen: Eruption .. agreed Derek and the Dominoes: Layla .. the fade out slide solo over the piano part is such a beautiful piece of playing, really adding to the song. Personal faves for me that I doubt had an impact on music but just knocked my socks off. Racer X - Loud and Clear (Live) .. take Yngwie style shredding, then have two guitarists do it live on stage together (Paul Gilbert and Bruce Boulliet) without missing a beat and WOW! Extreme - Flight of the Wounded Bumblebee .. so what if it's all a trick with digital delay? It still owns and conjurs up memories of Eruption. Nazareth - Love Hurts - I think this is the perfect 'slow' guitar solo and an outstanding example of playing 'for the song', and not 'for the guitarists out there listening'
Guest TheyCallMeMark Report post Posted September 21, 2002 "Fade To Black" as the single greatest guitar solo ever in it. I have definately heard cooler sounding stuff, and harder stuff, but that all doesn't have shit on "Fade To Black". The whole song builds, and builds, and builds and when the lyrics signal that the song is over it fucking just gets started. I don't know how long it is, maybe two minutes, but Hammet just shreds like a tasteful motherfucker. It's like what Slash always does, except it's metal, and it's GOD DAMN METALLICA. HELL YES I LOVE THIS SOLO WHOOO~! Any solo that is actually the climax of the songs, makes sure you god damn know it's the climax, gives you a wedgie and yells at you "HEY FUCKER THIS SONG RULES" wins every best guitar solo award ever invented, and this is it. Eruption is overated. Yngwie has done better stuff while watching his private chef prepare dinner while listening to Bach and slowly drifting into sleep (and so have Buckethead, Satriani, Vai, Johnson and a slew of others. And you have got to put "November Rain" high on your list. Or else I'll kill you. It's really tough to pick between the songs of the best shredder ever, but I have to. I am tempted to say "Nightrain", but I'll give "November Rain" the edge because that solo actually brings a tear to my eye in the sorrowful sense. And when he plays thye solo in front of the church... so freaking cool. "Rocker", AC/DC. This song gives me a boner in general, but Angus' work of making such an awful song so fucking good astounds me. Actually, I can't think of anyone who saves an awful song better than him; he had to do it on so many occasions he better have been good at it, I guess. And of course no list would be complete without "Alive" by Pearl Jam. I mean, come on, how could you possibly not include it? Do I even need to talk about it? Alice In Chains has two entrees, as far as I'm concerned. "Them Bones" and "Man In The Box". When you have two guys who sing exactly the same, one much better than the other, and play guitar in the same style, one much better that the other, you really have some wierd psycic thing going down. Both "Them Bones" and "Man In The Box" OWN YOU with some trading off lead action that could buy and sell your mother. RHCP's get "Scar Tissue". I kind of want to give them "Californication", but instead I won't. And then there is The Outlaws. They have this one song called "Green Grass And High Tides". Nine minute guitar solo's that include chords as part of their structure rule. No one has rocked a solo with chords like this before. Sweetness to the max! 1. "Fade To Black" - Metallica In no particular order "Rocker" AC/DC "Them Bones" Alice In Chains "Man In The Box" Alice In Chains "November Rain" Guns N' Roses "Scar Tissue" - Red Hot Chili Peppers "Alive" - Pearl Jam "Green Grass and High Tides" - The Outlaws Of course that's a very partial list; Pink Floyd would have to round it out along with "Over The Mountain" etc. etc. We can't be exact though. Guest DrainYou42 Report post Posted September 21, 2002 Solo's that haven't been mentioned: Steve Jones - Anarchy In the U.K. - Pretty much set the blueprint for Punk solos. Kurt Cobain - Breed - It may be easy as hell to play, but it sounds good, so it's on my list. Tom Morello - Pick anything off of Rage's s/t cd - Before he relied TO heavily on effects. Dave Navarro - Mountain Song - Makes the song what it is. I'm Done.
Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted September 21, 2002 probably Malmsteen will think Eruption is actually his own material, if its not his, then its no good (he completly trashed Satch, Vai and Petrucci in some column...fucker) and if I was to put a metallica solo on there, it had to be Master of Puppets or Whiplash. Fade to Black and One are highly overrated solo's
Guest godthedog Report post Posted September 21, 2002 hendrix, 'all along the watchtower'--best solo EVER as far as i'm concerned. effects, dynamics, speed...all used to perfect effect. some others that haven't been mentioned: velvet underground, 'oh sweet nuthin'--morrison was a damn good guitar player, but this was the only time he really shone. jeff buckley, 'hallelujah'. beatles, 'tomorrow never knows'--not technically brilliant or anything, but it just sounds so fucking cool. much better than hendrix's backwards solo from 'are you experienced'. Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted September 21, 2002 Metallica has never done a guitar solo worth a shit, and I stand by that opinion and will not move. It's not because I hate Metallica either, which is incidental. Kirk Hammett is marginally talented at best, and the single most overrated guitarist EVER. Pentatonic scales jogging around with some cheesy taps. Fucking pathetic. I'm not really into true "solos" that much, just take those riffs and put them into the song without having it stick out like a sore thumb, but anyway.. Eruption's pretty wicked There's a few Slayer songs I'd nominate, which will probably get some guff from people saying "Well, all Kerry King does is shred, yadda yadda" which is completely true, but he does it better than anyone. -Angel of Death -Captor of Sin -Seasons in the Abyss -Born of Fire All those have some pretty sick shit. Jim Fear-Dillinger Escape Plan Clip the Apex...-Dillinger Although I can't discount the guys like Vai, who basically do solos and nothing else. I have trouble getting past Malmsteen's ego, though. Guest La Parka Es Mi Papa Report post Posted September 21, 2002 http://guitar.about.com/library/bl100greatest.htm I've always been partial to Black Sabbath's War Pigs. The solo complimented the song perfectly. I also think that Eddie Van Halen and Yngwie Malmsteen are incredibly overrated. Malmsteen's music is so pussyish, it will make your balls shrink three sizes by the end of the first song.
Guest The Fett Report post Posted September 22, 2002 My personal favorite is the guitar solo in "Phantom Of The Opera" by Iron Maiden.
Guest B-X Report post Posted September 22, 2002 Big lack of Zeppelin stuff here. Page is/was a fucking God, and it disappoints me that I don't see more of his stuff on here. Examples I should be seeing would include "Since Ive been loving you" and "Dazed and Confused" off the The Song Remains The Same live album.
Guest mw679 Report post Posted September 23, 2002 I gotta add pretty much ANY SRV solo. He was magic on the guitar.
Guest JAxlMorrison Report post Posted September 23, 2002 I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I didn't mention Robby Kreiger's solo in "Light My Fire", ,obviously for The Doors. It often gets overlooked for Morrison's throaty delivery or Manzarek's fantastic job on the keyboards.....but listen to that song again and listen for his solo, you won't be disappointed. Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted September 23, 2002 Robbie Kreiger was extremely talented, and probably one of the more overlooked guitarists ever, IMO. He could play the tripped out stuff they were into as well as stuff with some classical influence.
Guest HellSpawn Report post Posted September 26, 2002 Led Zeppelin - Stairway to heaven and Lynird Skynird - Freebird, I agree. I dont think STH is overrated. *** I also love Deep Purple's Highway Star.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted September 26, 2002 Black Sabbath-A Bit of Finger/Warning. There's a spot in that song where it's nothing but Iommi being the man, and the solo fits PERFECTLY with the rest of the song. I'll vote for that.
Guest pochorenella Report post Posted September 26, 2002 Just to put a glam rock touch on this list, I'll nominate "In My Dreams" by George Lynch of Dokken, one of my favorites ever. From that era Eddie Van Halen's solos are can't miss. And Jake E. Lee's work with Ozzy Osbourne also comes to mind, for example "Bark At The Moon".
