They are both pizza ingredients wrapped inside the dough. Is there some kind of subtle characteristic the differentiates the two or is this basically like the sub/ hoagie/ grinder thing??

Stromboli is traditionally a sub with sausage, cheese, sauce, onions, peppers.

Calzone's basically dough stuffed with stuff and baked.

a stromboli is normally lots of meats and very oilly. Sausage, pepporoni, peppers, etc......

a calzone is based strictly on 2 main ingredients, dough and cheese. There is a always something to go with those 2 such as ham or spinach, but its mostly cheese inbside there.

You can almost think of a Stromboli as a pizza rolled up into the stromboli shape. A calzone is usually a dough pocket stuffed with mozarella & ricotta, and generally there is some sort of ham (prosciutto, capicola, or regular ham depending on how italian the population near you is) in it... and you usually dip it in tomato sauce if you want to.
