WWF MONDAY NIGHT RAW (2/25/02)

I’m going to work this in a way in which the New World Order never appeared in the WWF.  I just don’t know how you could book them in a good way, and the WWF obviously doesn’t either.

The show opens with an interview with The Rock.  He says that he’s faced Stone Cold Steve Austin in two Wrestlemania main events, and he has lost both of them.  He feels that he needs to prove to the fans, the critics, and most importantly himself, that he can beat Austin at Wrestlemania.  He challenges Stone Cold to a straight up one on one match, no stipulations.  The fans are really into this idea.  JR and The King are going crazy too, saying when Stone Cold arrives and hears the news, that maybe we’ll get an answer to the challenge tonight. Now we go to the ring…

TAG TEAM TITLES --- BILLY & CHUCK © vs THE HARDY BOYZ

Hardys dominate for the first minute or two with some high-risk stuff that we haven’t seen them use as formula offense in all their matches.  Billy almost beheads Jeff with a lariat, making Jeff into Ricky Morton for this one.  Billy & Chuck work over Jeff for a couple of minutes, with a hot tag tease in the middle.  Jeff somersaults out of a double-team back body drop and makes the tag to Matt.  Matt comes in and goes nuts all over the champs.  Jeff comes back in and the faces are dominating.  Tornado DDT by Matt, and Jeff goes up for the Swanton bomb.  Chuck crotches Jeff.  Lita gets up on the apron to attack Chuck, but he superkicks her off.  Jeff jumps from the top rope and ranas Chuck from the apron to the floor.  Matt goes for a rana in the ring, but Billy catches him with a powerbomb for a near fall.  Billy goes for a superplex, but Matt blocks and hits the Twist of Fate from the top!  Jeff is back up, and hits the Swanton for the win at 6:43 (**) The Hardy Boyz end Billy & Chuck’s tag title reign in less than a week.

Christian is in the back talking about quitting the WWF.  Lance Storm comes up to him and tries to convince him not to quit.  He said with Christian and Lance Storm’s talent together, they could beat the APA, take the #1 contendership, and face the Hardys at Wrestlemania.  Christian likes the idea, but he says if they lose to the APA, he’s quitting.  The APA is shown in their “office” and they say that kicking Storm & Christian’s ass would be no problem, and that they would take the Hardys’ tag belts at Wrestlemania.

Chris Jericho and Stephanie McMahon arrive in a limo to a decent amount of heel heat.  Michael Cole greets the champ, letting him know that he has a title defense against Kurt Angle.  Jericho shrugs it off and acts like it will be nothing.

INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE --- WILLIAM REGAL © vs ROB VAN DAM

Crowd is super hot for Van Dam. RVD chants throughout the entire duration of this minute-long match.  Regal scores with the hangman’s neckbreaker for a quick near fall, and a double underhook powerbomb for another near fall.  Regal brings a chair in the ring, but RVD ducks a chair swing, hits the Van Daminator, and then hits the Five Star Frog Splash for his first IC title at 1:23! (1/2*)

#1 CONTENDER MATCH FOR AN INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE SHOT

EDGE vs TEST

The winner here gets the IC title shot at Wrestlemania.  Stalemate until Test hits a huge back bodydrop on Edge. Test dominates with power offense for the next couple minutes.  Edge hits the Implant DDT out of nowhere for a near fall.  Test gets pissed after this and almost takes Edge’s head off with the big boot for another near fall.  He hits a gut wrench powerbomb for two.  He starts to question the speed that the referee is counting at, and backs Earl Hebner into a corner.  After arguing with the ref, he turns around and catches a spear from Edge for two.  Edge then debuts another new finisher, known as the burning hammer in Japan.  It’s a dangerous move, and is basically a reverse death valley driver.  They crowd lets out a huge “Ooooh” at this move, and Edge wins at 5:59 (**)

Stone Cold is seen arriving in the back to a huge pop.  The Coach tries to interview him, but Stone Cold just pushes him down and walks on.

LANCE STORM & CHRISTIAN vs THE APA

The APA start out dominating like the Canadian team are nothing.  Storm then clips Bradshaw’s knee out from behind and the heels go on offense.  Bradshaw makes the tag, Faarooq kills the little guys.  Bradshaw goes for the Clothesline from Hell, but Christian ducks and dumps him over the top.  Superkick from Storm on Faarooq.  They debut a spike piledriver for the win and the Wrestlemania title shot at 3:57 (1/2*)

Stone Cold’s music hits to a big pop and he grabs the microphone.  He says he feels he has nothing to prove by beating The Rock at Wrestlemania again.  Huge round of boos for that one.  Rocky’s music hits and he comes to the ring.  He reminds Austin that Rock pinned him at Survivor Series.  He asks Austin if he wants to end their long running feud with a loss?  Austin thinks for a second and accepts the match.  Then he goes for the KICK WHAM STUNNER, but Rock catches his leg on the kick, spins him around, and hits the Rock Bottom.  He pours a beer all over Austin and walks out.  Fans are split dead even for this.

TRIPLE-H, TAZZ, & SPIKE DUDLEY vs BOOKER T & THE DUDLEY BOYZ

This is your formula six-man tag match, with Spike playing Ricky Morton for quite a while.  He teases a hot tag to HHH twice, sending the crowd into a frenzy.  FINALLY he makes the tag to HHH who cleans house on all the heels.  Tazz comes in too and it’s KATIE BAR THE DOOR.  Booker T tosses Spike over the top into the guard rail on a Dudley Dog attempt.  Tazzmission on Buh Buh, but they fall through the ropes and fight on the outside.  D-Von and HHH go at it for a minute, with HHH eventually getting the upper hand.  He’s going for the pedigree, but Jericho runs in as the ref is turned toward Tazz and Buh Buh, and nails HHH with a chairshot to the back of the head.  Jericho nails Spike on his way out as well just for the hell of it.  Buh Buh covers for the heel win at 7:10 (**1/2)

The Undertaker comes out and calls out Ric Flair.  Instead we get Arn Anderson.  Arn explains that Flair doesn’t have time for challenges like this.  He’s co-owner of the WWF and he decides what goes on, not the Undertaker.  Taker chokeslams Arn, then brings in a chair and tombstones him on it.  He says that Thursday, if Flair doesn’t give him a yes, there will be even more hell to pay.

WORLD TITLE --- CHRIS JERICHO © vs KURT ANGLE

Fans still love chanting “You Suck” along with Angle’s music.  Bigger heat for Jericho now that he has Steph with him.  The crowd boos both men’s actions.  The match goes back and forth for a few minutes but then Jericho misses a blind charge and gets nailed with a German suplex.  Angle works over the neck and the ankle for a couple of minutes with submission holds and suplexes.  He finally locks Jericho in the Anklelock, but Jericho makes it to the ropes with Stephanie’s help.  Angle starts to go after Steph, but Jericho schoolboys him from behind for two.  Stephanie slips a chair in the ring and then distracts the ref.  Triple-H comes down, takes the chair from Jericho, and takes a swing.  Jericho ducks and he hits Angle in the face instead.  The ref turns back around and forces HHH out of the ring.  Jericho debuts a new finisher, the Cradle Piledriver, for the win at 12:29 (***1/2).

HHH interrupts Jericho’s celebration with a pedigree on the chair.  Stephanie runs away before he can catch her.  Show ends with HHH posing in the ring.
