12 Monkeys. Yeah, a very optimistic view of the future.

 

Pink Floyd's The Wall. One word of advice. Do not drive after seeing this movie as it will cause you to drive off a cliff the music is so depressing. Good, but depressing.

Interesting thing about Julie Stiles:

She's been in 2 screen-adaptations of Shakespeare plays ("Othello" and "The Taming Of The Shrew" ), both of which were disguised as teen movies ("Othello" was changed to O, and "The Taming Of The Shrew" was changed to Ten Things I Hate About You).

 

Dude, I'd do her so bad...

Seriously, I think Natural Born Killers is so depressing because it's a snapshot of our society's media love affair with killers and criminals.

The Deer Hunter. Just about the bleakest, most depressing movie I've ever seen. Especially considering the fact that it was the last movie that John "Fredo" Cazale made before he died.

Oh Deer Hunter is uplifting compared to the original All Quiet on the Western Front. That is the most depressing movie I've ever seen. I was in tears afterwards and in a funk for days after it. Hell's Angels and Eagle and the Hawk are other WWI movies that are incredibly depressing.

 

Lewis Milestone directed All Quiet and also another of the most depressing movies I've ever seen in Of Mice and Men.

 

Stuff like NBT isn't really depressing, it's more disturbing I'd say.

 

Lemme clarify:

 

sad = a movie that makes you cry but you basically ok a few hours later.

 

disturbing = a movie that weirds you out and makes you feel paranoid or worried about society (JFK, NBT, any Stone movie heh).

 

depressing = a movie that might leave you in tears and also bear on your mind for a week, leaving you a dreary bastard.

The Green Mile for sure. I don't know why Lethargic seems to think that it was so predictible. I'm not going to say it had tons of swerves, but it wasn't like some stupid teen movie where you really can guess what'll happen next.

 

Requiem For A Dream is just depressing because of the final 30 minutes. I'm kind of in the middle on the whole "not being made to care about the characters" thing, only cause I thought there were a couple times when they tried to get you to care about them (although they could have done much more). It's just a depressing ending considering how different everyone is when you compare them at the beginning and end of the movie.

 

Se7en isn't so much depressing as it is shocking the first time you see it. I already knew that it didn't have the "Hollywood" ending, but when I actually saw it for the first time, I was just pretty shocked by the ending.

 

American Beauty is also pretty depressing, even though you find out in the first five minutes that the ending is going to be a downer.

 

Even though it isn't out everywhere yet, One Hour Photo is a pretty depressing movie at times. Robin Williams is so great at creeping you out one minute and getting your sympathy the next, it's just amazing.

 

Well, even though there are a lot more, those are the ones that stand out for me at the moment. Looking at the list, it seems that all of these depressing movies are also great ones as well. That's a personal opinion, but I think that every one of these movies is a great piece of work.

I will say that Kevin Spacey made me laugh almost all the way through American Beauty but the ending was a real downer but the movie still gets two thumbs up

I agree with many of the movies mentioned above, but what about Boyz in tha Hood. That movie is so sad because mindless murders like that happen everyday across the world. Whether its in Los Angeles, Detroit, Calgary, or Paris - mindless gang murders are cutting our youth down at the knees. I find that terribly said.

 

Also, I find Apocolypse Now troubling. Just the terrible effect war has one a persons pysche - and that if even IF they survive. The death of Larry Fishbourne chokes me up everytime.

I recently saw this movie called the Dark Backwards. It's about this comic who is constantly screwed over and suddenly starts growing a third arm out his back. It's messed up...you should go watch it.

Doom Generation

Ghost World

For me, Doom Generation was mostly off-kilter and too frenetic and fast-paced for me to get depressed, but Ghost World was definitely depressing from the get-go.

 

I would put The Last American Virgin in the "depressing ending" category as well.

 

My other picks for "all-the-way" depressing are

 

Buffalo '66 - Although the ending was upbeat, the rest of the film showed just how pathetic a human being could be.

 

Dancer In The Dark - Bjork's mounting calamities made me sad from beginning to end.

 

Happiness - Suburban living never looked so bleak and morbid.

 

Niagara, Niagara - One of my favourite movies of all time. Love and psychological baggage rolled into an absurd road picture with lethal results.

Same here, although most of my friends can't understand how anyone can laugh at such misery and wretchedness, especially the very disturbing pedophile story. I laugh mostly out of the absurdity of the kid's reaction to his father's revelation moreso than the actual act. The rest I just chalk up to pure schadenfreude.

 

And, of course, Philip Seymour Hoffman proves once again that he is the King Midas of the acting world.

Yeah the people I was watching it with were definitely getting upset by my cackling peals of laughter during the most "disturbing" parts of that movie. But Solondz presented it in such a comedic way, I don't see how you could not laugh. Anyway, I just laughed too hard during that movie to get depressed by it. Yes, Philip Seymore Hoffman was great.

Arlington Road was depressing.

THe bad guy wins at the end.

 

First Jeff Bridges wife gets shot in the face with a boomstick (double barrel shotgun for those who don't know.)

 

Then he befriends the wacko neighbors who are terrorists. Then Tim Robbins and Joan Cusack kill Jeff Bridges girlfriends, depressing the poor guy for like 2 weeks.

 

Then JB finds out the Tim Robbins and Joan Cusack are terrorists and follows a van to a parking structure.

 

His FBI friends think he is the terrorists and draw guns on him. He hears something in the trunk of a car and opens it only for him find the real bomb! The parking structure is flattened and everyone thinks he's a terrorist.

 

The worst part, the son moves in with the neighbors.

 

Depressing shit.
