Mike Tenay is fuckin great.  Watch Halloween Havoc 97, his commentary is SO FUCKING GOOD bringing out historical shit and talkin bout Japan like it means something...

He's boring though.  I like Scott Hudson more then Tenay.

Can you imagin the team of...

Joey Styles

Don "Cyrus" Callis

"Professor" Mike Tenay

That would rule.

I can imagine that team. Tenay would be the ONLY good thing about it.

Once again I just don't understand why everyone creams over Styles like he's the Benoit of announcing.

I actually like Tenay. He knows a lot. JR even said a while back on the Ross Report, that Tenay is one of the best of there.

All of the announcers (except Micheal Cole) could call a match if they were allowed to. Watch Tony Schiavone from the early 90's. The fat man knew his stuff. Watch JR from 97-99 and he could sell the importance of the match. Styles and Tenay could give you a wrestler's background and make the wrestlers seem more important with just a little info, thus helping them get over.

When a company prevents you from selling a match and the wrestlers involved, they just seem like shills. It affected Tony to the point you wanted to mute his voice, you can see it in JR's current work. having crappy color men like Lawler or Zbyzsko isn't doing any one any favors.

If you ever watch old WWF videos, listen to the interplay between Ventura and Monsoon. That is how announcers should play off each other. The WWF would be wise in adapting that style. It almost seemed they were there when heyman and Ross were selling the Invasion angle but the shitty booking and nonsensical storylines were not doing those guys any favors.

And fire Micheal Cole now. He is the second coming of Todd Pettingill. Just sickening.

man oh man i wish they'd bring back heenan

Heenan would be good, but he's battling cancer, and I doubt Vince would hire him full time due to his age.

Watch the old interaction between Heenan and Monsoon. Another classic announcing tandem. I think all WWF announcers should be forced to watch Monsoon operate with Ventura and Heenan before even puuting on a mic.

I almost feel sorry for J.R. at this point.  Look at it this way.

1.  The product has dropped considerably in the last year.

2.  How can a broadcaster sell the importance of a match that ends before the importance can be actually sold?

3.  J.R.'s taking all the heat for the cruiserweights not being pushed properly.

Looking at point 3.  J.R. is in charge of hiring talent.  He has little to do with the actual booking of the product.  I fully believe if J.R. had any real say on the booking, then we'd have seen the cruisers pushed a long time ago.  But the booking committee has made Ross look like a liar.  He once did an interview with the PWI mags where he said you wouldn't see angles with domestic violence or incest or murder, and we've seen Triple H Pedigree Stephanie when they renewed their wedding vows, Mark Henry admit to having sex with his sister, Vince getting a solid look at Stephanie's breasts, and several instances where a car was dropped off a forklift or somebody was run over or something along those lines.

Remember, there was some controversy a few months ago when JR was very vocal about not wanting to do the Kiss My Ass club angle.  He's getting the blame for the lack of cruiserweight angle when he doesn't have any say on his own character?

Yes, JR's lost a step, so to speak.  Yes, his ability to call a match isn't what it used to be.  Yes, he's a corporate shill.  He has to be a corporate shill, that's part of his job.  But I'm still convinced that if we get former workers handling the product instead of the boss' daughter and a team of comedy writers who have probably never seen a good wrestling match writing the product, then JR's abilities will go up.  Maybe not to his late 80s quality, but at least higher than what we're accustomed to.  I'm just not convinced Vince McMahon's going to admit his little girl isn't the creative genius he thought she was.

I loved Tenay, just keep him out of a main play-by-play position.  He's more than capable, but he filled in for Tony on occasion when Tony was sick or having breast reduction or whatever, after a couple of hourse his voice had me climbing the walls.  Tenay is good.. in MODERATION.  :)

When he would come in as the third man during the cruiser matches.. that was gold.

yep the third man position shold be THE tenay spot.

Tony Schavinie was as good as JR then over time he would forget the little things like move names and Dusty Rhodes did not help him any, then eventually Tony became a full fledge Hogan mark, just talking about the main event every second of the show which would lead to giving away results before the matches end or just wonder how Hogan would fight Flair at the PPV 2 months in advance.  You know things like that.

If Jim Ross ever gets to this state of mind he should be put on vacation for awhile.  And I think Ol JR is getting very close to this scarely realization of marking out for his friend Austin, every time the nWo does any thing "illegal"

Please say it aint so, don't let JR go out like this........the WWF needs Tenay and Cyrus to do Smackdown ASAP.

Yeah Schiavone used to be incredible at PBP.  He forgot so many move names over the years I have to wonder if he has Alzheimer's.  It's ridiculous how bad he got.

jhawk, i can see your point about jr but if he doesn't have control over the cruisers getting airtime then the fat fuck shouldn't even mention them until we know when they'll be pushed.

I'm sure JR has pull and if he can sell a two minute HHH squash, then he can sell a 3 minute Booker match instead of pretending it didn't happen.

sidenote- and if they're gonna insist on Cole being an announcer than make the little gerbil fucker a heel already. we all hate him so he might as well act like a bad guy.

JR is in the realm of suck, no denying it.

Monsoon and Ventura commentated a match like it was REAL.  Every move had a purpose, be it a chin lock or a back breaker, they treated it like a competition, like pro wrestling.  They were announcers.  JR and the King Play the role of announcers...

I was watching Wrestlemania 1 the other day and the Monsoon/Ventura team did everything you just pointed out perfectly. They managed to sell the intensity and athleticism of the matches to a point where they became more engrossing than they perhaps had the right to be from a quality standpoint. No one helped sell a matches importance better than Ventura in his pomp, no one else has ever come close to emulating his style or effectiveness. While JR has certainly let it slip in recent times i couldn't imagine anyone else taking his position. Lawler on the other hand adds absolutely nothing these days.

when did lawler really add anything whatsoever than "PUPPIES"

"when did lawler really add anything whatsoever than "PUPPIES""

watch the Rock-Trips Iron Man. Lawler and JR sold the match. They were on that night. And pe-Attitude Lawler was ok but then again anyone can look good next to Vince

"1-2- he got him, no he didn't!" Every fuckin match!

Lawlers commentary during the ironman match between HBK and Hitman is really good (he SO carried Mcmahon).

I find a little bit of Ventura in Heymans commentating, maybe its the connotations in his voice, but he does sound like the body.

This deals with the fact that they would both criticize their partner for discrepancies or being bias. Anytime JR mumbled an idiotic line Heyman was right there jumping on whatever he said. Jesse did the same thing. Watch any Wm and Jesse was always ON!!!

Schiavone became a shill, plain and simple.  I doubt very much that he was intentionally being an idiot.  He was told to promote the NWO during other guys matches, and various other stupid things that he said, like the comments about Mick winning the title.

Guest goodhelmet

i agree that schiavone became a shill but i still think he was directed toward that path. as for the foley comment, he has already gone on record saying that he was told to announce foley's win.

I would like to see Ventura AND Heenan alone..that would be funny.

dude, that's a trainwreck waiting to happen. they would be so busy kissing each other's ass, they'd never call the action. but during hogan matches, the venom they would spit would be priceless.

What do you expect from a company owned by the worst announcer in wrestling history? Seriously, think about it. Vince McMahon thought that he was so good on commentary, that he stayed there for how many years? The guy obviously has no clue on what makes a good commentator, so as a result all the commentators he pays suck.

"Waaaan-Toooooo-HeGotHimNoHeDidn't!"

"And now the ... OH MY GOD, WHAT IS THIS? It's MABEL!"

I know Wrestlemania 10 is supposed to be one of the best PPVs ever, but I can barely watch it due to Vince being such a dumbass.

Vince was not very adept at acting surprised at the things he'd booked :)

It used to be great when Ventura would take exception to some of the dumb comments Schiavone would make. He would either make a sarcastic comment in a fairly laid back way or just crucify him with a great angry tirade of his own. There's some quite amusing moments from Summerslam 89, especially when Tony sounds like he's having a heart attack over Hogan and Jesse seems quite concerned/amused about the state he's getting himself in.

I grew up with Tony and Jesse on WCW worldwide.

I thought they were great :)
