Guest Mad Dog Report post Posted September 23, 2002 Just to give you an idea I've watched CMLL for quite awhile now. Around 2 years I think. So I've seen a few of the New Japan guys on random occasions. My question is where is a good site to get tapes, how much will they run me and what are the best tapes to get? Also what would be the best style to look for.
Guest PlatypusFool Report post Posted September 23, 2002 Look at the 'Read and don't forget' thread at the top of this forum for tape sites. The best tapes to start with are the Super J Cup 94 & 95 (with 95 being slightly better for an intro to puro), and possibly some new NJPW (some recent G1 Climax '02 stuff, anything from the last couple of months), especially if you've seen some of them in CMLL. I suppose also, if you a lucha fan, you'll take a lot of enjoyment from some of the better Toryumon and T2P around as well
Guest BionicRedneck Report post Posted September 23, 2002 This is by no means a knock on Mad Dog, but I think someone should put a pinned topic of "New to Puro etc." as they are loads of posts like this. Anyway, I would agree get Super J Cup 94 and
Guest DragonflyKid Report post Posted September 23, 2002 There is so much great stuff available that there are so many starting points one can choose. I would suggest pick a certain style or promotion(Juniors or 90's AJ.) then go chronologically from the beginning of it's great period on forward, or get a comp with the classics then go back and fill in the gaps with tv blocks and commercial releashes and rewatch the classics and be amazed at how much greater they are when they are able to be appreciated more with a sense of the history behind them to go along with the great wrestling. I would suggest Tabe as a dealer, order 4 tapes which you can get 6 hours on and each is only $11.00 and that is with S&H included. He has alot of the '93 tv blocks and the classics if you are going to go the All-Japan route. http://www.icehouse.net/tabe/index2.htm
Guest TheGame2705 Report post Posted September 23, 2002 If you want you can read the topic I started called "Getting my first set of puro comps". It's a discussion of what some of the best stuff you should get is. I have a range stuff that I'm getting suggestions for. I'm new to buying puro tapes too but I like Tabe and I'm going to buy from wrestleholics.com. On a side note, anyone know if they're good?
Guest Jubuki Report post Posted September 23, 2002 You mean wrestleholicsvideos.com - yeah, Fredo's all right. You can get better VQ from Tabe or Jeff Lynch, but Fredo has a lot more Lucha than the others (though I think Lynch is starting to get more).
Guest TheGame2705 Report post Posted September 24, 2002 Aight cool I just don't wanna get stiffed. I'm gonna order maybe 4 tapes from him which'll cost something between $52-64 so I'm not trying to lose it.
Guest Mad Dog Report post Posted September 24, 2002 For right now I've decided to go with New Japan. I figure they're closer to what I'm used to with Lucha and the old WCW style. I'm getting the J Cups but I'd like suggestions on maybe 3 other New Japan shows that are fairly good buys.
Guest wolverine Report post Posted September 24, 2002 Get these two matches ASAP: 4/30/92 Liger-Samurai 3/17/96 Liger-Ohtani After rewatching these, they are probably my two favorite New Japan matches ever.
Guest Mad Dog Report post Posted September 24, 2002 Thank you for the help. Out of curiousity is the match where Ultimo Dragon beats Ohtani for I think it was the J-Crown any good?
Guest wolverine Report post Posted September 24, 2002 YES! But I don't think that match is as good as the matches I mentioned.
Guest RickyChosyu Report post Posted September 24, 2002 J*Crown Tourni '96 is a great buy, too. It has features Ohtani/Dragon, which, having not seen Lyger/Ohtani 3/96, is my second favorite NJPW match ever. I have to second Wolverine with Lyger/Sammy 4/92 being a must-have match, and the best NJPW match I've ever seen. As an aside, which J-Cups did you get? Only '94 was hosted by New Japan, as WAR hosted '95, and Michinoku Pro hosted 2000.
Guest Mad Dog Report post Posted September 24, 2002 As of right now I have J-Cup 94 and 95. Also I ordered the J-Crown tourney. The site I'm going to get those 3 off of doesn't have the 2 you suggested which pisses me off b/c it's hard to find any site that has a decent enough collection to get the ones recommended. Guest RickyChosyu Report post Posted September 24, 2002 Click on the "Read and Don't Forget" folder, and you'll find plenty of credible tape sources, some of which definitely have the two matches we suggested.

Guest Tim Cooke Report post Posted September 27, 2002 It's 8 hrs...I think all the matches listed are NOT clipped. But first, are you new to puro? If not, have you ever watched any shoot style stuff (UWF, UWF-I)? If not, RINGS may not be th ebest place to start. Tim
Guest wolverine Report post Posted September 28, 2002 Tim, How did you rate the Tamura-Kohsaka 6/98 match? I've seen universal ***** on this match, so I can't wait to see it.
Guest Tim Cooke Report post Posted September 28, 2002 It's a ***** match without a doubt. Blew me away. It was the first RINGS match that I ever saw. After seeing the 1/97 and 9/97 Tamura v Han matches, it made 6/98 even more special. Han rules all, but what Tamura and Kohsaka did with 30 minutes on the mat is incredible. It kind of weakened my view on Takada a little bit after seeing the three of them work magic on the mat. But that is also like saying I was soured a little on Flair after I got to see AJPW's best......even if AJPW top stuff is better, Flair is still great. Personally, I would take most GREAT UWF style matches over any Junior matches. The useless mat work in most Juniors matches has really soured me a lot on some of those matches. But for a GOOD INTRO to all that is great about Shoot Style, I would say the following matches would be well worth a LYNCH CUSTOM: 12/5/84 Takada v Yamazaki 8/13/88 Takada v Yamazaki 11/10/88 Takada v Maeda (This match just to show some variety. Maeda is slow on the mat and annoys me but Takada wins and has great heat throughout the match) 12/22/88 Takada v Backlund Takada/Albright UWF-I series Takada/Vader UWF-I series Tamura/Han RINGS series and whatever combos of Han/Kohsaka.Tamura you can get. There is a 9/11/85 Takada/Yamazaki match from UWF's last V. 1.0 show but I haven't seen it since Lynch or no one else has it. Probably going to go in with TABE and get MASTERS of the 12/84 and 9/85 shows from Katsumi. Tim
Guest Evil Ash Report post Posted September 28, 2002 I'm not new to puro or shoot style. Though I haven't seen a ton of UWFi or anything. Plus, I'm a big fan of PRIDE and the UFC, so I don't think that's an issue. I've heard much mad love for Volk Han as well. That in mind, do you think it's worth $20, or could I spend that money on better, similar items? $20 for 8 hours ain't bad.
Guest Black Tiger Report post Posted September 28, 2002 Mad Dog, before you watch the J Crown, pick up the Sky Diving J, its the show that led up to the J Crown and its has some awesome matches like Lyger vs Togo, TAKA vs Delfin, and Ohtani vs Sakuraba. Also I'd reccomend picking up The 1994 Super Jr Tag League, the finals between Benoit/Ohtani vs Sasuke/Black Tiger is ****3/4. Have you seen that match Wolverine? Guest Tim Cooke Report post Posted September 28, 2002 Ash, Are you in the UK? If so, then it is worth it. If you are in the US, there is plenty of other ways to get stuff just as good. Tim
