Surgery leaves Lawler with two black eyes

by Phil Speer

LOS ANGELES – Sept. 22, 2002 – Jerry “The King” Lawler looks better today, but the scars and swelling are still visible.

Lawler was told when he had a minor surgical procedure almost three weeks ago that it would only take 48 hours to recover. But now he’s being told it’ll be more like one to three months. Still, it’s a small price to pay for “the King.”

“I’ve always been self-conscious about my neck, profile-wise,” Lawler said. He added that the real reason that he wore a goatee all those years in Memphis was to hide his neck. “I don’t know if you’d call it a droopy neck. It’s almost like a double chin; it’s just a fat neck.”

Lawler was reading the Continental Airlines in-flight magazine on a recent trip when he saw an advertisement for a doctor in New Jersey who performs corrective neck surgery.

“I thought, ‘That’s exactly what I’ve been looking for,’” he said. “I wanted to improve my look. When I talked to the doctor, he suggested adding a tail. And I said, ‘No I want something done to my face.”

But seriously, the doctor told him, “You’re the perfect candidate (for the surgery). It’ll turn out great. You’ll love it.”

Essentially, the doctor performed liposuction on Lawler’s neck and then sewed a nylon-like material – “almost like fishing line” – around the neck, tying it behind each ear to prevent future drooping.

The doctor also said that since Lawler was going to be unconscious for surgery anyway, that he might as well have his eyelids done. Lawler was hesitant because surgery was on a Wednesday and he knew he’d have to perform the following Monday on RAW, but when the doctor insisted that recovery time was just 48 hours, “the King” agreed.

“The next day when I woke up, my eyes were swollen shut,” he said. “I looked like I fought Mike Tyson with two hands tied behind my back.”

But Lawler added that his eyes didn’t hurt at all. His neck, which didn’t look bad, was excruciating. “It may have been the most painful thing I ever had done,” he said.

With two black eyes, Lawler commentated on RAW two weeks ago, but only appeared on camera wearing glasses or covering his eyes with binoculars. He’s called the doctor several times since the surgery, and has been assured that everything will be fine soon.

“(The doctor said) give it at least a month and you’ll feel 100 percent better,” he said. “But in three months, you’ll be ecstatic.”

What an odd surgery to have.

That's what you get for using the Continental Airlines in-flight magazine as your source for cosmetic surgery.

Haha. I bet King wanted to keep all this a secret too.

I was thinking Lawler injured his neck somehow. Those of you who seen "Clerks" can guess what I'm thinking of.

I watched the whole movie on Kazaa not too long ago and I still don't know who you're talking about when it relates to someone's neck. Maybe I didn't notice.

Right around the time of the funeral...and it was brought up about a guy breaking his own neck attempting self-fellatio.

It looks like there is some string or something wrapped around Lawler's neck. He does not look too attractive right now.
