Guest B-X Report post Posted September 25, 2002 I really want to get this, but alas, i have bills to pay and stuff. I guess I'll rent it first. I am a die-hard Tekken fan, so I'll have it sooner or later. Thoughts?
Guest jimmy no nose Report post Posted September 25, 2002 I guess the game is only out in Japan and Europe until tomorrow or Thursday, so I personally haven't played it, but I've heard it is pretty much the same game as Tekken Tag Tournament. It's not that that's a bad thing, it just doesnt seem to give any reason to buy it. I already have Tekken Tag and if I didn't I could buy it very cheap now. I guess big time Tekken fans will still want to have it, but it's reportedly nothing new.

I've been getting progressively angrier at the gaming press over the past few weeks for reviewing T4 after clearly giving it nothing other than a very surface level inspection, and telling people that it's the same as TTT simply because they were too lazy/didn't have enough time to play it in depth enough to learn how different it is. It is arguable whether it's better or worse overall than TTT, but it's certainly not the same. Anyway, neither Walmart nor Best Buy had gotten it in today, so I don't own the home copy yet. I guess I'll try again Friday.
Guest B-X Report post Posted September 25, 2002 I really view TTT as a stand-alone title.. I like the tag format, but it was basically a prettier version of Tekken 3. However, Tekken 4 is a lot more, most notably the "3d" environments. It adds a whole new level to the game. Pure creaminess.
Guest KoR Fungus Report post Posted September 25, 2002 Agreed, and I think a lot of the reviews I've read so far aren't giving the new enviornments enough credit. The wall game in T4 is about as good a wall game as I've seen. In most fighters, if you get hit into a wall, it's just a bad thing, as you take extra damage and get comboed off it. In T4, that can happen, but you can also tech off the walls, so there's some level of risk involved with trying to set up a big combo against a wall, as a good player will just tech off it and sidethrow you (or worse). Position changes also work well with the walls, not just for position changing so that your back isn't against a wall, but also using position changes to push someone who's near a wall into it. It's probably the most strategic wall game I've seen, and it annoys me when it's ignored by reviewers. I disagree that TTT is just a prettier T3, though. If all they did was boost the graphics and add a tag mode, I'd agree with you. However, they also added about a dozen characters that weren't in T3. Yeah, they were in T2, but most of them got really substantial updates for TTT, as substantial as the updates that T3 characters got going from T2 to T3. That's enough for me to consider it a true sequel.
Guest Sakura Report post Posted September 26, 2002 I got the US version and the Japanese. What pisses me off is that it took Namco half a year to release and they barely added anything besides subtitles and English menus. So far I've noticed the Story Battle voice over guy, Steve Fox and Craig Marduk have new voices. Also, Hwoarang doesn't speak english in his win poses for some reason. And I'm with KoR. I am so sick of these mainstram reviews. Wha's worse is that every one of them spends more time rambling about VF4 than they do the game they're actually reviewing. How long is this VF4 Jesus Push going to last? Will EVERY fighting game review now have to feature comments like "but then VF4 came out and changed everything", "This is good but not as DEEP~! as VF4" and "the one player mode needs something like VF4's Kumite Mode". I got nothing against VF4, but the press is so obnoxious. They never go in depth about why it's so brilliant and revolutionary. And yeah, anyone into TTT is going to see the difference between 3 and it. The universal low parry was added and all the old characters got a bunch of new moves and changes to their old moves. It's definitely a true sequel.
Guest EricMM Report post Posted September 26, 2002 I have it. I unlocked Jin twice because I forgot to turn autosave on I played with Force mode a bit, but otherwise I just need a partner, the game is very easy. I need something to learn, I can beat it my way. Also, honestly, bare bones is the name of the game, I mean the menu screen is even plain. The music CERTAINLY isn't what it used to be, and it just feels like a bit of the flash is gone. Its still tekken, but it's not going to draw as many people in as flashier games, so I will have noone to play with.
Guest KoR Fungus Report post Posted September 27, 2002 Ugh, you better find someone to play it with soon or I'm going to be bored out of my mind come fall break, especially since I don't know King well enough to teach you how to be competitive with him. Can't you play against Mitch? Anyway, I still don't own it yet, didn't have time to get out to EB, but I played it for awhile, and I disagree about the lack of flash. It's not as good a port as it could have been, but it's flashier than TTT, imo. The intro and endings are *far* superior (TTT's endings were horrible), the music is the best that it's been since T2 (it finally gets away from the endless techno), and the overall graphic look is the best it's ever been. The menu screen is plain, and there aren't any extras as cute as ball mode or bowling mode, but other than that, it still has the usual Tekken gloss.
Guest permagrinning Report post Posted September 28, 2002 I have it too. The graphics on the stages are just beautiful. The gameplay is solid and crisp as always. I think if you're a die hard fan or haven't played before this is definitely one to get. I just love the arena where you get to fight in front of hundreds of people and you can see the smoke crossing lights and throwing off a shimmer. Sweet game. Guest areacode212 Report post Posted September 29, 2002 Well, I walked past the Port Authority arcade today, so I decided to come out of retirement and play Tekken 4 for like the second time ever. I wasn't really used to all the new game mechanics (i.e., walls, inclines), but it was kinda fun, especially since I got to kill my first Edd...er, Christie button-mashing scrub, using my old Nina tricks. So how long does it take to get over the fact that 1+3 no longer throws?
Guest What? Report post Posted October 2, 2002 If I get what you mean by 1+3, then 2+4 do the throws, whereas 1+3 just do reversal things...I dunno, I like it. I just rented it and unlocked every character in about 45 minutes, I guess. Hwoarang is yours and my god. Steve is the second coolest in the entire game, mainly because the kick buttons make you dodge and feignt (right word?) around the kicks and punches. Being raised a boxer's son, I-and my dad-loved that feature. It made for some rather cool finishes to really long and hard fought fights.
