WWE Smackdown

Sept. 24 - San Diego Sports Arena

Report by William Lee

Dark Matches

Al Snow pinned Horshu after the Snowplow. Tough Enough III must be taping backstage, as the what's left of the class sat front row.

Ivory pinned Molly after a cross bodyblock off the top rope.

Velocity Tapings

Crash pinned Billy Kidman after the Crash Landing (Styles Clash).

Shannon Moore pinned Doug Basham after a corkscrew moonsault.

John Cena pinned D-Von with a sunset flip.

Smackdown Tapings

Rikishi pinned Chavo Guerrero after a banzai drop.

Tazz moderates a bikini contest between Torrie Wilson and Nidia, with Billy & Chuck as judges. Torrie wins and afterwards an angry Jamie Noble & Tajiri challenge Billy & Chuck to a match.

Billy & Chuck beat Noble & Tajiri after a doomsday device.

Funaki tries to interview Brock Lesnar, who wants to conduct the interview in the ring. Funaki brings the chair Undertaker used with him, so Brock kills him.

Edge pinned Eddie Guerrero in the match of the night. Probably No-DQ because it turned into a mini-ladder match at the end with some crazy bumps. Edge wins it with the Edgecution off the ladder.

Undertaker squashes Matt Hardy. Afterwards, Brock lays Taker out with a belt shot.

Rey Mysterio beat Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit. Good match, but too short. Mysterio hits the West Coast Pop on Benoit for the pin.

wrestlingobserver.com

They just had to give Edge another win over Guerrero. It is like 6-1 in that series against Eddy now. Rey Mysterio beating Angle and Benoit is dumb. Nice way of doing something about Undertaker pulling that refusing to job bullshit at the ppv by letting him squash Matt Hardy again.

But... but... MATTITUDE~!

What would Undertaker's beef with MATTITUDE~! be anyway? He made an unsuccessful run-in at the PPV? Is that really a reason to have a match, especially since Undertaker has already killed MATTITUDE~! the last three weeks? Argh.

Fo sheez,

Actually in one-on-one matches it 2-2 with one pay per view win each. The tag match could be decent, Edge/Guerrero and the main should be good. I'm sort of disappointed they didn't go with Rey/Knoble and tease putting the title on him in his hometown.

Other than Steph setting up the main event, I didn't read of any skits involving her. That's a good thing! Hopefully they won't edit any in before Thursday.

I'm waiting for someone to complain about spoilers because you put "blah" under the title.

Horshu vs. Al Snow in a dark match?! Horshu, the WCW Power Plant/Saturday Night jobber that's entire character/gimmick was that he had a horseshoe-shaped haircut?!

He sucked way back when, but if he's appearing now..he likely was using that gimmick on the indy circuit. :P

Crash over Kidman? Bah!

Rikishi over Chavo? Double bah! Hopefully he doesn't have to take the Stinkface.

The tag match, Edge/Eddy, and Benoit/Angle/Rey look good, though.

I'm guessing SD doesn't get anybody from Raw? Losing Hurricane w/out compensation? Bah!

More Detailed Report......

Smackdown San Diego Sports Arena September 24, 2002

Sent in by Dan Hunsaker aka “Danaconda”, rajahwwf.com reader

Credit: RajahWWF.com

Footage is shown of RAW with the lesbians and the resulting Rikishi attack.

Rikishi vs. Chavo Guerrero

During the match, Chavo tried to do a stinkface on Rikishi (even pulling up his tights to imitate Rikishi’s outfit). Rikishi wins with his finishing splash from the top rope.

Winner: Rikishi

Bikini Contest: Nidia vs. Torrie Wilson

Billy and Chuck come down to judge the contest. Tazz officiates the contest, saying that the girls have 30 seconds to show their stuff and Billy and Chuck will each rate them from 1 to 10.

Nidia starts off first, trying everything to get the crowd’s attention, even trying to do the cabbage patch dance. Billy and Chuck’s score: a 6 and a 9

Torrie Wilson is next. Crowd erupts into an ovation. Both Billy and Chuck give Torrie a 10.

Jamie Noble and Tajiri come out and challenge Billy and Chuck. Noble states, “Nobody screws Nidia, except, well…(fill in the blank)”

Noble and Tajiri vs. Billy and Chuck

Standard tag team match with one good guy (Billy) getting beat on the majority of the match, while the other partner (Chuck) tries desperately to tag in. Chuck is finally tagged in and clears house. Billy and Chuck perform their finisher on Tajiri with Noble sidelined on the outside.

Winners: Billy and Chuck

After the match, Nidia and Torrie go at it. Torrie (with Billy's help) ends up spanking Nidia.

The Titantron shows Stephanie McMahon talking on the phone. Kurt Angle walks in and congratulates her on the HLA screw job, even going as far as saying “Whoomp there it is!!” (Steph’s eyes roll). Kurt asks for a rematch with Benoit tonight. Steph smiles and says that she figured he would ask her that, however she has other plans…(Camera pans left and finds Rey Mysterio). Steph says tonight, the main event will involve a triple threat match with Angle vs. Benoit vs. Rey Mysterio.

Funaki knocks on Brock Lesnar’s door. Lesnar comes out, looking as intimidating as ever. Funaki sheepishly asks him if he will provide Taker with a rematch for the WWE title. Lesnar smiles, saying Funaki is the only one backstage who has the courage to ask him that question. Lesnar says he will answer that question, but only in public…how about the ring??? (hhhmmm)

Funaki comes down with the chair Undertaker hit Lesnar with at Unforgiven. Lesnar comes out with Heyman (who doesn’t speak by the way). Funaki shows the chair to Lesnar. After a brief pause Lesnar throws the chair. Funaki in desperation attacks Lesnar. This then goes into three minutes of Lesnar savagely beat Funaki to a pulp before finally giving him the F-5.

Matt Hardy is backstage with Shannon Moore watching Matt’s previous matches with the Undertaker. Matt gloats about how he scared off Hurricane to RAW and how he defeated the Undertaker twice. Moore reminds him that the reason Undertaker ran away was because Brock Lesnar always got involved. Matt trash talks Lesnar and walks down the hall. Lesnar slowly appears out of a doorway after Matt walks off, having overheard the entire conversation.

Undertaker vs. Matt Hardy

Quick match with Undertaker coming out on top with the Last Ride. Before Undertaker can celebrate, Lesnar comes out and hits him with the belt. This opens up Undertaker and afterward he slowly staggers to the back.

Winner: Undertaker

Edge is seen walking to the ring.

Edge vs. Eddie Guerrero (By far the best match of the night)

This match showed how athletic and physically gifted these two stars really are. The two stars battled back and forth with chair shots and even fighting on top of ladders. Edge inadvertently took out the ref in the first five minutes of the match with a missed ladder shot intended for Eddie (looked pretty real from my vantage point). During the match, the two were battling on top of a ladder Edge had set up (second time in the match). From my view, it looked as though they were about to lose their balance and fall out of the ring (ladder and all). They were able to recover though and you could actually hear everyone in the audience sigh a breath of relief. Edge comes out on top in the end.

Winner: Edge

WATCH SMACKDOWN FOR THIS MATCH!!!!! Eddie even got a standing ovation from the crowd after the match.

Footage was shown at the press conference held earlier today in Seattle regarding the announcement of Wrestlemania 19 being at Safeco field. They show many WWE Superstars talking during the conference. Kurt Angle stole the show, saying, "If it weren't for Kurt Cobain and Frasier, nobody would come to this god-foresaken rain forest."

Benoit Interview: He trash talks Angle and mildly insults San Diego’s hometown hero.

Angle vs. Benoit vs. Rey Mysterio

Angle comes out and taunts the crowd, making inferences to the INS. Benoit comes out and gets directly in Angles face. Mysterio comes out next to a standing “O”. This match primarily focused on Benoit and Angle, with Mysterio being shoved to the outside. In the end, Mysterio pulls away a victory by pinning Angle with Benoit outside the ring.

Winner: Rey Mysterio

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've saw an other report that said Rey got the pin on Benoit, so read into what you will.

Let's all hope and pray that next week on Smackdown we see The Whole Funakin' Sho vs Lesnar and a new champion is crowned.

*Crosses fingers, knowing he is not the only one doing so*

I'm sure Edge made sure to let everyone know how much of a fluke it was that eddy beat him at the PPV before killing him on SD!

Angle and Benoit lost a handicapped match...clean? They are SO being punished for having that match at the PPV.

Who's da man now? Pull a double switch I might actually like Edge as a heel....hell he already looks like a monster face that's not being pushed anywhere. Put that into a heel role and people might start to like it...but push him ofcourse. Hell if they actually pushed Edge based off of how he comes off so strong I might like him cause atleast then there would be a point to it.

Ugh Rey/Angle/Benoit was NOT a handicap match it was a triple threat match!!!

Oh, okay, that's better. Doesn't help that they're still not being pushed after that match, though.

Because they want to turn one of them and that match really didn't lead to anything, so they're keeping the feud on.

Or, in other words, they're not using them in anything useful, because they're SMALL.

In other words they used the first match to gauge crowd reaction before going ahead and pushing either one of them to be fed to Brock. You wanted the truth.

Anyways, one spoiler report said Eddie/Edge went nearly twenty minutes.
