My first Surgery next Tuesday...I need advice

SO I'm having surgery on both of my feet on October 1 (Tuesday) because of a bad case of Planters Warts. I guess they spread bad and knowing I have no knowledge of it, I was screwed and now they are needed to have surgery on. The foot specialist said that it would be laser surgery, would last about 15-20 minutes, I wouldn't feel a thing, and I would be hooked up to an IV.

 

Now, I know this sound stupid....but this is my first surgery and I'm nervous as hell. So, anyone whose had surgery before, could you please answer these questions:

 

1. Does the IV really hurt and wtf is the purpose of it?

 

2. Has anyone actually had planters warts before that required surgery? If so, tell.

 

3. Why do I need to go to the hospital an hour before the surgery?

 

4. Any tips on how not to be nervous?

 

I know I'm sounding stupid asking these, but I figured I would probably find the most realiable answers from regular people. Thanks for anyone who can help me out.

I wouldn't say it hurts...it's just a little uncomfortable...after a while you barely notice it though.

 

4. Any tips on how not to be nervous?

Man, it's already in your mindset to be nervous...so there's probably nothing anyone here can say to help, sorry, but that's probably how it is.

Speaking as someone who's never had laser surgery but has gone under the knife several times for various reasons, including getting plates and screws put into my left arm when I broke it to pieces...

Like YNA said, it's uncomfortable. The purpose, iirc, is to keep your blood sugar level stable, as you won't want to be eating for most surgeries. It's probably just a standard procedure.

Registering, getting into the gown, meeting/greeting the doctor... just simple shit.

I had an IV a few weeks ago. Actually I had 4 in less than 2 days. It doesn't hurt at all. It actually feels pretty cool. The IV had pain killers. You get a little bruise where it was but thats about all.

I had jaw surgery last summer. I didn't really have enough time to be nervous because I had the surgery a mere two days after discovering that I needed it. Just try not to dwell on the surgery. Realistically speaking, laser surgery isn't really something that is worth getting worked up over. People routinely get it down all the time.

 

As for the IV, basically it is just there to give your body it's proper nutrients. For the most part, they give one to everyone that enters a hospital.

 

Are you going to be getting a local anesthetic, or are they putting you out? My dentist told me I would be put out for my jaw surgery, but it turned out I just needed like 6 Novacaine shots.

I think it's mostly glucose and stuff. When you're hooked up to tose, let me tell you, you have to go to the bathroom a LOT.

The IV is a needle, plain and simple. However you feel about needles is how you'll feel about it. The actual fluid injection tends to be painless, though.

I have a subconcious trigger in my brain that makes me pass out every single time I see a needle enter my skin. I have no idea why this happens. I'm not afraid of needles, and I can watch other people get shots all day long, but as soon as I feel myself get stuck, and see the needle, I'm out like a light, literally. I even passed out because of a TB Test, which is the sissiest girly shot you can get.

I've had 5 major surgeries plus a ton of other stupid stuff. I had a thing on my foot removed, but they froze it and pulled it out instead of using lasers or knives and it didnt hurt.

 

My best recollection of IV is when I was in for surgery and they put me to sleep and while I was asleep they gave me the IV. I woke up, middle of the night and had to go to the bathroom ( I hadn't had anything done to me, I was scheduled for surgery early the next morning..) so I went to the bathroom. As I was coming back, I felt some liquidy stuff on the floor, so I turned on one of the lights and my IV had come out (somehow I didnt feel it) and there was blood all over the floor in a nice little trail where I had gone to the bathroom. I nearly freaked out cause I didnt know where the blood was coming from til I looked at my arm and noticed that there were bandages like they would secure an IV with to my arm. I was told I was lucky the needle didnt break off in my arm..

1. It kinda depends on how well-trained the people hooking it up are. For instance, when I had surgery on my ear 8 years ago, the dipshits couldn't find a vein and I ended up getting pricked like 30 times before they finally found one on my foot. Three years later, I was having surgery on my knee after I had torn the cartlidge during football practice 5 months before and the people there(I went to two different hospitals, the ear was in Birmingham and the knee was in Dothan, my hometown) got it on the first try and I didn't feel a thing.

 

You really shouldn't have anything to worry about with regards to the IV other than accidentally knocking it out a bit while asleep(a common occurance).

 

 

3. Along with getting the gown, your room, and meeting the doctor, there's also breathing tests depending on the surgery, I think. I got one for my ear surgery, but not one for my knee, so you probably won't have to deal with that(It's just inhaling and exhaling into a mouthpiece).

 

 

4. Just don't think about it. The orderlies will more than likely joke around with you and strike up conversation so you won't feel so nervous.

I had an IV named after me once. The girl kept ripping it out of her arm as she slept, but the intention was there.

 

Now when I think of an IV being ripped out, I think of myself. How sweet.
