Everyone keeps saying proof 2000 like it blew 1999's #s away or something.

 

um...no

 

Both years had ratings in the high 5's and 6's sometimes higher.

 

and some of the 1999 events drew higher buyrates than their 2000 counterpart.

 

We're not talking about Night and day here...we're talking about a couple of .00's difference between the 2.

 

Both of which were twice as good as now

I think the thing about 2000 was..Austin wasn't on it most of the time.

 

Just HHH and Rock..and it still drew those numbers.

I meant the mat stuff. I assumed ther doing it because they want people to think Brock's got absolute control on the mat. When they hit Brock/Angle the second time at WrestleMania, the story will all be about how Brock is the better wrestler and Angle is outdated and outclassed, that he's smaller and weaker, and that he couldn't attain the heights Brock did as quickly as he did. But for that to work, he needs to go over a bunch of people (well, at least Taker) and beat Angle once prior, having Angle kick out of the F-5 the first time, forcing the shooting star or something big. I figure by that time Brock will have wrestled enough guys that are good to actually build up some skill (or showcase it).

I don't see what that has to do with the story vs. wrestling argument.

 

Especially when Austin is a far better worker than either HHH and Rock.

It was the undercard. The 2000 undercard and upper mid-card was strong and carried a lot of wrestling and sports entertainment interest. There were a lot more challengers for the title, and in 1999 and 1998 they were really focused on keeping Austin strong and building around him.

 

I think 2000 had something like 200,000 more people attending shows, but part of that was due to running bigger houses starting in late 1999.

It also seemed like more people were after titles..instead of this "Only 1 guy at a time wants a particular title" bit.

You know, I enjoy a really good long storyline. I enjoy a really good long promo. The key word missing from the Wwf's formula is "really good" - yet they have the long part down to a science.

I hate promos

 

I always have and I always will.

 

If you can't say what you have to say in under a minute...it's too stupid or confusing for your audience anyway.

Hell Yeah the Mid-card was better in 2000 over 98-99. They had Jericho, Benoit, Eddie, Angle, etc feuding over the IC Title. Plus, the storylines revolved around great talkers like Angle & Jericho, and they made it seem like the IC Strap was important.

The ONLY use I can see for a 20 minute promo..is once a month after the PPV to set up the main SL. That's it.

 

I agree with BPS here..though a lot of guys can't get to the point in under five.

The difference then was that even though there was a lot of yapping the matches were still solid. Today the wrestling just sucks.

 

Plus there was an anyone can win the title feel to 2000. Guys like Rikishi, Jericho, Benoit and several others came close on many occasions.

 

Today Trips just reminds you that no one can beat him all the time then proceeds to squash some low mid carder.

The problems aren't promos themselves. The problems are that the promos go on too long, and the wrong people are doing the promos. Also, we don't hear from everyone. They have to have plenty of time to hear from everyone.

There's some women in Joshi Puro that wrestle better than some men in the WWE.

 

But alas WWE fans just don't care about women's wrestling.......or atleast the marks don't.

The biggest issue I have is that the core wrestling audience who likes "wrestling" never leaves, and then we are all rewarded with "HLA", Lawler, Matt Hardy Rehabs, etc.....If Vince built his company around the fans who will ALWAYS watch regardless of popularity and try to mold more people into WRESTLING fans, than he should have a problem with wrestling not being "hip" of course WWE might never get 7.0 ratings, but at least he will build a steady consistency that will never go away.

when I watch a football game I don't expect to see 70% of the time focused on the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders. I want to see Emmit go for the record not Jerry Jones being interviewed on the next exclusive endorsement by a shoe or soda company.

How can you not like Steve Austins 'superstar' promo or Cactus Jacks "You are my salvation Tommy Dreamer" promos from ECW? Dems are fn art.

Tonight's Smackdown PROVED that good and plentiful wrestling will ALWAYS trump 20 minute promos, no matter how good they are. The crowd was rabid for the whole night.

How can you not like Steve Austins 'superstar' promo or Cactus Jacks "You are my salvation Tommy Dreamer" promos from ECW? Dems are fn art.

Of course I loved those promos, but I don't think there has ever been a promo in WWE/F that has been as good as those. WWE doesn't do those type of campy-style promos in the back. That is what made those so good and realistic. WWE is just big production superstar-acting style. Those promos probobaly wouldn't go over with WWE fans because they aren't firing off catchphrases, or talking about how this is their favorite city.

Yes, but you go to WWE.com and there is a picture of Torrie in her bikini top and it says,

Their pretty much saying the Bikini contest was the best part of the show.
