Commission says Vargas tested positive for steroids

Sept. 27, 2002

SportsLine.com wire reports

LAS VEGAS -- The Nevada Athletic Commission has accused Fernando Vargas of having steroids in his system when he lost to Oscar De La Hoya on Sept. 14.

De La Hoya stopped Vargas in the 11th round, adding the WBA 154-pound title to his WBC title.

Marc Ratner, the athletic commission's executive director, said Friday that Vargas' post-fight urinalysis came back positive for stanozolol. It's the same drug that cost sprinter Ben Johnson his gold medal and world record in the 100 meters at the 1988 Olympics.

Vargas is in Hawaii on vacation and could not be reached for comment.

Shelly Finkel, one of his co-managers, told the Las Vegas Review-Journal he isn't sure whether Vargas will dispute the result, but Finkel insisted that if the test is accurate, Vargas must have taken steroids without his knowledge or consent.

After the commission files a formal complaint next week, Vargas will have 30 days to respond. A hearing will be scheduled to determine a punishment. Ratner would not speculate on what type of punishment Vargas could receive.

"We'll all look him in the eye and say, `Why? What happened?"' said commission chairman Luther Mack.

Mack was upset about Vargas' results, especially since the commission warned boxing promoters on July 1 that fighters would be tested for steroids.

"It was a big fight. It was a great matchup pound for pound, a good fight for Nevada, good fight for the fans, and all of a sudden when the fight's over, we have this happen to us," Mack said. "That really bothers me."

I never liked vargas for his cocky attitude with little to no skills to back it up. This makes me dislike him more. Along with his total no-show of sportsmanship after the fight. ALl he could say is "I am in the best shap of my life" before the fight, now we know why :)

This still doesn't change the fact that I hate hate HATE De La Hoya. I wish Vargas wiped the mat with the sonofabitch.

Vargas in his two biggest fights so far has been exposed as someone who once you get too, can't recover from the big shot.

Vargas was huge going into that fight. Doesn't really surprise me too much. He's still a hell of a fighter with great handspeed and power. Just a little bit of a suspect chin. De la Hoya just outboxed him, though.

Now it makes La Hoya look even more awesome in my eyes. I don't follow boxing too much, but he's always been a guy I said was DA MAN, and this just drives it home further.
