I haven't had a chance to plow my way through the whole thread yet, but I did download the Wilco album last night, and it's pretty good. To anyone who likes that, I suggest getting some Sam Roberts (the whole Inhuman Condition CD is good, and, it's only 6 songs, so it'll take no time to download). Thanks again.

Best pop record of 2002, no doubt. Kotzen, you should check out this record by this British duo Frou Frou...sort of a Bjork meets Kylie thing, with trip hop grooves and big melodies. Not as infectious as Fever, but right behind it.

Get 'Soul Mining', 'Dusk', the album of Hank Williams covers whose name escapes me. 'Mind Bomb' is good as well. If you have listened to any Elvis Costello, get it. Doesn't matter what. The guy has a huge catalogue of songs over the last 24 years or so, with only one or two misfires. And even those aren't too bad.

Pick up Trout Mask Replica yesterday, it's completely awesome. Little story about that record... to record it he took himself and his magic band out into the swamps to a tiny house there, he wouldn't let them leave until they'd finished the album. Also, instead of your usual recording process, they all jammed for ages on each song and then Beafheart sent them all into different rooms of the house, and they recorded like that, resulting in everythign on the album not quite fitting together perfectly, as they couldn't quite hear what they were each playing. Also, Fugazi, Fugazi, Fugazi for some of the most innovative punk music ever. Pick up 'Repeater' or 'Red Medicine' ASAP. For other kinds of music apart from 'alternative', I suggest branching off into non-gay techno music. Folk like Aphex Twin, Autechre, and even more poppy stuff like Basement Jaxx have all been mucking about with beats and tune for ages. If they sell this stuff in the USA, pick up 'The Richard D. James Album' by Aphex Twin very soon, it's excellent, and also try 'Rooty' by Basement Jaxx. Devo are also great in an old school weird sort of way. Some live phish is readily available on file share programs so if you want some good dates just lemme know.

I can't stand them, but I hate that entire genre of music. Jam bands just do absolutely nothing for me. I don't mind Trey Anastasio's stuff with Claypool in Oysterhead, though. That cd isn't especially good, but it's catchy as fuck.

Uncle Tupelo (Jeff Tweedy's old band) Son Volt (the other UT offshoot) Whiskeytown None of these bands are/were afraid to play loudly either despite being country influenced. 'New'/'Alternative' country/'Americana' or whatever the current label is represents the best musical 'movement' (sorry for all the labels) to have emerged over recent years. Basically artists who are equal parts influenced by post-punk/alternative rock and by folk/country (Whiskeytown were often viewed as being influenced by Gram Parsons and The Replacements to an equal degree). The term is also used to describe more traditionally influenced artists whose work doesn't fit mainstream country radio (Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams). Silver Jews The Jayhawks Willard Grant Conspiracy Calexico Giant Sand Lambchop The Guthries The Handsome Family Wagon Knife In The Water Red Star Belgrade Neko Case Scud Mountain Boys Gillian Welch Steve Earle Lucinda Williams Emmylou Harris Butch Hancock JOHNNY CASH (you could just start here) Solo Artists: More modern stuff... ANything top 40 should be turned off immediately. Find a free speech radio station in your area, and just listen to it for a few days. They will play every type of music, only the quality of it will put a grin on your face like you are opening christmas gifts.
