Ron MacLean Leaves CBC

Recommended Posts

Guest treble charged

Stolen from TSN.ca:

Hockey Night in Canada has a gaping hole to fill following Monday's announcement that host Ron MacLean would not be back after 17 years with CBC Sports.

All I have to say is, 'Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!' This is TERRIBLE news. MacLean, IMO, is what makes HNIC entertaining. He's the perfect straight man for Don Cherry, and CBC is going to have a HELL of a time replacing him, especially considering the season starts in 2 weeks.

Fuck.

I can't believe that they ponied up the cash for Cherry but not Maclean, who is much, MUCH more valuable as a host for HNiC and pretty much any other sporting event that they happen to have.

Well, I guess that's the way it goes (flips pencil)...

Boy, has there been some major backlash over at the CBC forums in the little time since the news has broke.

And for those who care (and spread the word):

And just checking, in the five minutes since I have signed it the list has grown by about 30 more people. Me thinks CBC underestimated the popularity of one Ron MacLean.

Yeah, I checked out the petition this morning at around 8, and there were 536 signatures. Now, 4 hours later, it's at over 2600.

Apparently people in Canada woke up and got pissed off.

MacLean is the backbone of that show.I like Don Cherry but he's only on for about 5 minutes a week.MacLean has to be much more valuable to HNIC..or should be anyway.

You'd think so, wouldn't you?

So, who's gonna be the new host? My guess is that they'll bring in Brian Williams to host until they can find someone to permanently fill the duties - if they don't give in and resign Maclean. I dunno if Williams can handle Cherry's idiotic droning, but I know he can hold a progam together pretty well - just don't let him do play-by-play...

Mark Lee (I think that's his name, at least) may be a good choice. He's done some play by play, mostly in lesser play-off series (He did the Ottawa/Philadelphia first round series last year), plus, he did the women's games at the Olympics.

They'll probably just get Scott Russel or Scott Oake, though, as they already had prominent roles on HNIC.

Around the 24 hour mark of the online petition and it has already garnered 12000 + signatures. As well, the media is starting to pick up to the major backlash and it is getting some press.

Kelly Hrudey is an analyst, just as Cherry is. He can't take MacLean's place, since they don't need another analyst.

It won't be the same. Ron was the perfect foil for Cherry.

I think they are having talks again, so he will probably end up back with the CBC anyways.

His agent was quoted in the paper this morning saying that they hadn't been called back to the table yet...has there been an update on that?

The latest news says they're after Rex Murphy to replace MacLean. Why don't they get MACLEAN back?

Ed Whalen would be great, but he's kind of dead... that sucks, he was always the best when he did the Flames on Calgary 7...

I watch La Soiree du Hockey on SRC anyways, and you can look at my avatar to see why.

The red X tells you to watch a show that's not on anymore?

Cool.
