Joshi

Does anyone have any ideas for good tapes to get in to Joshi? I don't necessarily want to get the VERY best stuff, a mistake I made with AJPW. I've read some reviews on airraidcrash, but I'm not sure if it's a very different style than the other stuff I've seen, so this would be sort of a primer.

Thanks a lot!

As far as the style, it is similiar to AJPW, NJPW in terms of style. Lucha, on the other hand is a totally different style.

Joshi will take a little while to get used too such as the way they run the ropes (which is just a tad different) and the way they sometimes bridge out (which with a few matches I think you will actually grow to like such as I have).

As for tapes, get Barnett's Best of Joshi 1990-91 2 vol set if you want to start in chron order...if not, I don't know what to recommend since the best stuff tends to be what I am getting right now.

here is another site that has brief descriptions of some must-see joshi cards....

http://www.quebrada.net/QuebradaTapes.html

look on the left and look under the various women's promotions and click on the different years. a great, easy to read primer for new joshi fans looking for great wrestling.

A note on Quebrada. While it can be helpful when it comes to match lists and descriptions, some of the star ratings from the "Golden Age" of Joshi tend to get overblown. Two matches that come to mind immediately are Kong vs. Toyota 3/26/95 and Hokuto vs. Toyota 9/2/95. These matches are in the *** range, but Lorefice overrates them all the way up to ****1/2 and ***** respectively. Very nutty.

Then some legit ****+ matches like Yoshida-Akino 1/99, Ito-Toyota 8/01 and Ito-Momoe 9/01 don't even make it to ****. This is why I don't bother with his ratings at this point.

i can agree on lorefice's ratings but his brief descriptions of the overall show are pretty dead on at least from what i have seen. whether a match gets *** or **** from him is not a big concern of mine. the fact that i have discovered some fantastic shows because of him is.

I was thinking of picking up both of the dreamslams first. Any comments? Thanks for all of your help.

Both Dreamslams are worth getting, I also recommend going here and getting Blue Thunder Joshi comps 1 & 2. They each have great matches and the video quality is excellent which is always important.

You're joking about this, right? The Joshi comps are, match for match, the same ones Scott Leighton made. They're probably just dubs of Scott's masters, meaning the VQ probably isn't so hot a year later. That, and his "Toshiaki Is a Grumpy Bastard" tape (which isn't even listed correctly - should be 92-98) is one I put together ages ago. Do we get even a thanks? Nope...

You *need* to see Big Egg Universe Parts 3 & 4 as well. These are essential to someone starting out with Joshi stuff.

All I know is the Joshi comps I received from him had excellent video quality, I have ordered tapes with "EX vid Q" before from others only to be disappointed, that was not the case when I ordered from BTV. I stand by my recommendation of BTV's Joshi comps.

BTW, does Scott Leighton have a tape site?, I have heard of his comps but have never come across his site.

No, he doesn't have one - he just shilled briefly when he put them together.

And seeing BEU as a starter for Joshi is like watching 6/3/94 right out of the gate.

I agree that it's the pinnacle, but the gap when it comes to accessibility to a new viewer between the two, is rather large in my view. Which is why I had no problems listing it, but of course, it's best to start out early. Since I don't have any shows earlier than 6/21/92, I'd say that's a pretty good choice, even if the main is heavily overrated by some.

A damn fine couple of comps could be made from the stuff that covers from about 9/91 to the 92 JGP, not only to get the background going for the interpromotional period, but also to show the Aja/Bull feud, to show Hokuto rising to prominence, and show Toyota & Yamada becoming The Team in AJW. I'd have to wager that a good bit of the interpromotional stuff could be equally condensed. There were a couple of really nice Jumbo vs. Misawa comps that John put together on tOA about this time last year, I think; it wouldn't be hard at all to do the same with AJW, JWP, and the first 6-8 months of the interpromotional feuds.

Read Lorefice?

What?

I mean, he said 6/21 was a draw at one point...huh? How can someone be trusted who can't even keep results straight...and he's one of the people who's talked up that match so much. Though I would consider recommending the last 12-15 minutes of the January farce just to contrast against what they did down the line.

Hey, by the way, have you seen Lorefice's latest on the 1/4/92 Toyota-Yamada match? I think you may find it a humorous read:

I just finished watching that match, I read the Lorefice review before I watched it and then read Chris' afterward. I have to agree with Chris' opinion, the match should have gone around 20-25 minutes and not 40. I'm a big Toyota fan but the last 15 minutes of this match was bad, the unprotected piledrivers were sick and irresponsible. I though the match would end up ****+ while watching but my rating kept going down around the 25:00 minute mark until the end. I usually wish certain matches were longer to prolong the drama(e.g. 11/94 Kong/Kansai) but I didn't even want the overtime in this one.

I've liked what I've seen of Manami Toyota from 1992-1994, but most of her 1995 stuff drives me insane. The 9/2/95 match against Hokuto was the point where I really started disliking her - then I saw her in 2001 against Ito, and I was once again a big fan.

If you get the DreamSlam shows and want to stick to the interpromotional stuff after them, then get Dream Rush (11/26/92) with the Yamada/Toyota vs. Kansai/Ozaki match. After that you can get a comp of the following matches up to the Legacy of Queens show (8/25/93):

- 12/1/92 - JWP Comm - Mayumi Ozaki/Hikari Fukuoka vs. Yumiko Hotta/Takako Inoue

- 1/15/93 - Feb Champ Forum - Dynamite Kansai/Mayumi Ozaki vs. Yumiko Hotta/Takako Inoue

- 1/24/93 - AJW Comm - Akira Hokuto/Etsuko Mita/Mima Shimoda vs. Eagle Sawai/Harley Saito/Miki Handa

- 4/18/93 - May Champ Forum - Devil Masami vs. Bull Nakano

- 5/5/93 - FMW Comm - Megumi Kudo/Combat Toyoda vs. Toshiyo Yamada/Manami Toyota

- 5/8/93 - AJW Comm - Takako Inoue vs. Harley Saito

- 6/3/93 - AJW Comm - Dynamite Kansai/Mayumi Ozaki vs. Yumiko Hotta/Takako Inoue

- 6/11/93 - AJW Comm - Akira Hokuto vs. Yash Kurenai

- 6/20/93 - JWP TV - Mayumi Ozaki vs. Takako Inoue

- 7/4/93 - AJW Comm - Toshiyo Yamada vs. Harley Saito

- 7/31/93 - JWP TV/Comm - Dynamite Kansai/Mayumi Ozaki/Cutie Suzuki/Hikari Fukuoka vs. Aja Kong/Kyoko Inoue/Takako Inoue/Sakie Hasegawa

- 8/5/93 - AJW TV - Akira Hokuto vs. Harley Saito
