What if Chris Benoit never left WCW...

Ok, I myself don't even know how to answer this. I'll have to think about it for a while...

...but I thought of this question, and thought I'd go ahead and through it out there for disscusion! So...

...what IF Chris Benoit never left WCW, and STAYED WCW champion? What would that have done for WCW? What would be different, IF anything would be different? How would Chris Benoit be different right now?

That's easy.

Nash would have booked himself to be the guy to beat Benoit (most likely before SuperBrawl)

Nash would have gone on to feud with Sid..in the Worst. Feud. Ever.

Benoit would of been made to look weak by new WCW booker Kevin Sullivan.

Now, if Russo is booking, Benoit is in better shape. Supposedly Russo was going to have Benoit/Hart feud and main event Superbrawl after Bret finished his feud with Sid.

I think Bps hit it on the head. That's exactly what I think WCW would've done with Benoit holding the strap.

AOL still would have sold WCW to Vince.

Benoit might be slightly more over to the marks, but I doubt it.

I think Benoit would have dropped the strap in a week and Sullivan would emphasize Benoit's victory as a fluke. It would have zero impact on WCW because Kevin Sullivan, who was never a world champ, would not have allowed it. Then again I can see where Sullivan held a grudge and all.

In a shoot interview with Kevin Sullivan, Sullivan said he was going to have Beniot fued with Sid and drop the belt to him inorder to build up Sid/Goldberg for the belt.  So I guess Beniot would have just been a transitional champion, then probably get buried by Sullivan.

That's a funny way to get revenge on a guy...make him a world champion...

Why can't Vince have a grudge against Benoit?

I don't think it was Sullivan's decision to have benoit win the belt. i know Russo wanted tank friggin Abbott to win it so he got yanked. Then the agents decided Benoit would go over. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Benoit is in a tougher spot in the WWF. Vince likes his champs that are big and have charisma. Benoit lacks the charisma, but a manager (Paul Heyman) could get him over the hump as a bad ass heel.

if he stayed with wcw he would have lost the strap almost before he could put it around his waist. he would have been back in the mid card feuding with eddy so in other words I would have rather seen him stay in wcw.

Guest goodhelmet

no, because eddy left for the wwf with him. Then we got to see some excellent matches against jericho, eddy, rock, trips, austin, angle. I'm thanking God that Benoit went to the WWF.

i don't think eddy would have jumped if benoit didn't go, there reason was that they were afraid of being buried by sullivan, benoit had the best reason to worry so if he stayed the others probaly would have too.

Belive it or not...Benoit winning the WCW Title was Bob Ryder's idea (I know). From what he said on his message board...he pitched the idea to Nash after Russo was removed. Nash liked the idea so he pitched it in the booking meeting and Benoit won the title.

Ryder sucks and I have no doubt that Nash had nothing to do with Benoit's title reign

even if nash did have something to do with benoit getting the belt it was only so he could suck away benoit's heat by crushing him. god i hate nash

The whole title Benoit winning the title was just a way to make him stay. Nash & Sullivan thought that would happen, but Benoit told still left.

if they thought that would make him stay they're bigger fools than i thought they were.

Uhh it's not THAT foolish, is it?  You gotta try and get the guy to stay somehow.  If he's worried about being buried, give him the world title, I think that's quite a gesture.  Benoit wasn't convinced obviously, but there were other factors too I'm sure.  WCW just wasn't a great place to work, even if you didn't have enemies on the booking committee :)

This "big man fetish" thing is such a load... are Austin, Angle and Jericho huge?  No?  What does that tell you?

Nash probably liked the idea of giving the title to Benoit because he thought he would have no trouble then booking himself to beat him for the title.

I'm glad Benoit left when he did. I'm just sad Nash is around again.

Wasn't the chronology like this:

1) Benoit is given the belt to convince him to stay

2) Sullivan was made head booker

3) Benoit is pissed about #2 and jumps to WWF

Is that right?

Guest Mystery Eskimo

Yeah, I think you're right.

Didn't they take the belt off Benoit because Sid tapped whilst under the ropes? So even if Benoit had stayed he may not have kept the title?

Not a thing. The Radicals' departure didn't cause WCW's death---it was just a sympton of an overall problem.

Well, he'd have been buried in the Invasion angle.

That tells me those guys had charisma. They didn't need to be big guys. They got over from their charisma. Something Benoit lacks.

Guest Goodear

So wouldn't you say charisma is more important to Vince's pushes than the size of the people involved?

Guest cobainwasmurdered

the big man fetish is that vince keeps raming them down our throats i.e. TEST,Big Show,Kane,Undertaker.
