Guest imajackoff? Report post Posted October 3, 2002 Insomnia has me in it's grips again tonite and Im watching NFL films on ESPN. It occured to me that MLB has never even tried to develop such a promotional tool for their product. It seems like every time I watch NFL films they have a feature on a player that I had never heard of, or know very little about that gives me an appreciation for their career as well as the history of the game itself. Think of all the untold stories and great footage that MLB just lets go to waste. The one thing that baseball has over all the other major sports is its long and rich history, and they seemingly choose to ignore it. Of course, this is the same league that just aired the defending champs first playoff game at 11pm on 3rd rate cable network. So, maybe I shouldnt be so surprised. Guest razazteca Report post Posted October 3, 2002 well ESPN does pimp baseball alot with Sports Center and MLB 2 Night. Then there is the question of why have baseball games during a week day before 5pm when people are usually at work or school.
Guest Leena Report post Posted October 3, 2002 Then there is the question of why have baseball games during a week day before 5pm when people are usually at work or school. Because everyone bitched when NBC showed every playoff game at 8pm during the '95 season. If they're going to have 3 games a day, there's no way around it. Guest treble charged Report post Posted October 3, 2002 Of course, Major League Baseball is also the same league that CHARGES people to listen to their games on the internet. So, SO completely stupid. I mean, how many people do you expect to get who are willing to PAY to listen to the radio? So retarded. I'm sorry, that's just my pet peeve of the last few days. Guest oldschoolwrestling Report post Posted October 3, 2002 My only problem with the NFL is the blackout rule. They charge such enormous prices to go to a game, and even those who pay for NFL Ticket can't watch home games if its blacked out in the area.
Guest danielisthor Report post Posted October 3, 2002 baseball scheduling is fucked up as well. Tuesday the early game was Minnesota at Oakland and 1 or 2 eastern time? so that game started at either 10 or 11 am on the west coast. WTF. Then the Yankee game came on at 8 followed by the Diamondbacks and Cards. Thats just messed up. The Yankees sold out every single day game this year. 40 to 50 thousand every time, why not start that game at 1pm eastern time then either the D-Backs or A's game at 5 then the other at 8 or so. Why have 3 games on, why not just 2? Makes no bloody sense.
Guest treble charged Report post Posted October 3, 2002 While I don't like how the games go on way to long at night, I do prefer baseball's first round format over the NBA's. I mean, a 5 game series should be quick, yet somehow, the NBA manages to stetch it out over the course of 2 weeks if it goes the whole way. It shouldn't take more than a week to play. Guest alkeiper Report post Posted October 4, 2002 Of course, Major League Baseball is also the same league that CHARGES people to listen to their games on the internet. Don't most of the other leagues do the same? MLB.com charges $10 a year to listen to EVERY game during the season. Given the time, effort, and bandwidth required to pull something like that together, I don't think that's unreasonable in the least.
Guest treble charged Report post Posted October 4, 2002 NFL doesn't, and neither does the NHL as far as I know. As for the NBA, I don't really care.
Guest Leena Report post Posted October 4, 2002 I know NBA charges to listen to games, I think NFL does too. Why have 3 games on, why not just 2? Makes no bloody sense. Then every series would have an off day every 2nd day, thus devaluing the regular season even more. Arizona could only start Johnson & Schilling if that was in place. If I were in control of scheduling, I'd only have games at 5 & 8 PM EST. If there's 3 games that day, put 2 of them on at 8. 4 games, 2 on at both times. This problem only arises during the Divisional playoffs, and I doubt there's many people that watch every minute of the 1st round of the playoffs. The most important thing is letting the home fans watch their team. I doubt many fans in San Francisco watched the Giants at 10am, and I doubt many St. Louis fans stayed up til 1am to watch the finish of their game. That's the main problem that should be dealt with. Guest treble charged Report post Posted October 4, 2002 I've listened to some NFL games on the internet, and wasn't charged. Maybe that was only for the first few weeks of the season, though. I'm not sure.
Guest bravesfan Report post Posted October 4, 2002 The NFL.com site does NOT charge, but that's over a 16 game season with 32 teams. It factors out to 256 games in a entire season. Each and every game is put on either the Sunday ticket(PPV) or Daytime/Primetime TV (FOX, CBS, ABC, ESPN), so it's easy to find all of them. The MLB.com site DOES charge, for a 162-game season with 30 teams, which is 2430 games in total! 95% of the time, you will not find more than ONE baseball game on your cable/broadcast stations, while the Season Pass only selects games from your region. Only die-hard baseball fans will find that MLB.com's broadcasts are worth the money.

Guest MarvinisaLunatic Report post Posted October 4, 2002 Its amazing the ammount of history that Baseball has, and they dont have something like NFL Films on ESPN. Of course they are doing the memorable moments thing (Cal Ripken 2131 game is leading! Vote!) and they also had the All Century Team and whatnot, but they honestly dont do enough with the 130 years of history that baseball has.
Guest kkktookmybabyaway Report post Posted October 4, 2002 "Of course, Major League Baseball is also the same league that CHARGES people to listen to their games on the internet." I'll say this. I like the real-time internet updates. I'm at my PC doing three different things, click on the MLB bar and find out the game situation. "My only problem with the NFL is the blackout rule. They charge such enormous prices to go to a game, and even those who pay for NFL Ticket can't watch home games if its blacked out in the area." If you live in the SW Ohio area, you wouldn't mind the blackout rule -- trust me on this...
Guest danielisthor Report post Posted October 4, 2002 All i can say, when i lived in South Florida, by Thursday night we knew if the game was blacked out or not. If so, we took off to Naples, did some fishing on Saturday and watched the game at a bar, then drove home. NFL does not charge for listening to the game on the internet. I have listened to 3 out of the 4 Miami games online for free. Watched last weeks game in a bar in Hoboken where they have 7 tv's and everygame was on using the NFL Ticket. Guest MaxPower27 Report post Posted October 4, 2002 Getting back to the MLB is inept at promoting itself: They have been airing a "Behind the Moments" thing on ESPN, with little 7 or 8 minute things on various great things in baseball. They had one on about Pete Rose's 4192nd hit, Willie Mays' catch and great baseball moments like that. It was very well done, and I look forward to such things as that from other sports. I'd love to see some hockey ones, and to see the baseball one continued.
Guest Ozymandias Report post Posted October 4, 2002 "Why is MLB so inept" Bud Selig. He's a clown. Nobody in the league has any respect for him. MLB will continue to destroy itself until they get rid of him and find a real commissioner. It all starts at the top. If you don't have smart leadership at the top, you're fucked. Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted October 4, 2002 MLB needs to drop the nostagia act. How many time do we have to see May's catch or Fisk waving his HR fair. Start marketing today's players a little more.
Guest Smark Hammill Report post Posted October 4, 2002 MLB needs to drop the nostagia act. How many time do we have to see May's catch or Fisk waving his HR fair. Start marketing today's players a little more. I agree with this. I appreciate the great past tradition of baseball, but when it's the only way you market your sport, that's not good. I'm glad baseball doesn't cater to the hip hop market like the NBA does, but baseball, to the other extreme, caters way too much to the 30 and over white male crowd. Just my opinion.
