The Last Word

A few months ago, I discovered that Digital Cable would be installed in my house. I was overjoyed, hundreds of new channels at my disposal. When the installation was complete, the first channel I turned to was a station called Nick Games and Sports. I was amazed, classic Nick game shows on all day. Old school Double Dare, GUTS, Legends of the Hidden Temple, Finders Keepers, all the old game shows were there. I watched it all day! Memories of my childhood drifted back into my mind. A force called nostalgia had a hold on me, and I continued to watch the channel all the time for about a month. Nostalgia doesn’t have a lot of shelf life though, folks. I soon found this out as I became bored as hell with this new channel. I still watch it occasionally, to see Mr. Obsessive Compulsive himself, Marc Summers, send another young’n for a ride on the Pie Coaster, but the nostalgia had been drained from me.

Around the same time, rumors of the nWo signing with the WWF were about. Being a net smark, I had my mixed feelings. I’m quite the Scott Hall fan (though I’m starting to question why). Hell, I even liked Nash back in the day. But Hogan, that was a whole other story. Much like many of you, I was a little Hulkamaniac. I trained, said my prayers, and took my vitamins! I loved the guy. I bought the action figures. I had the bash em buddy (which had frequent matches against my ALF doll). I watched him in awe; he was seemingly immortal, always coming out on top, and fighting for what was right. I pretty much worshipped the ground he walked on. He was truly one of my childhood heroes. I’m sure this sounds familiar to a lot of you.

As the years went by, my love of Hulk Hogan slowly drifted away. I slowly became a part of the smark community. I realized things about Hogan, I noticed that his matches sucked, I learned of the crap he pulls backstage. I learned that he seemed immortal because he refused to job all the time. I grew to despise the man. But deep down, I still had a soft spot for him (and probably always will).

As you all know, Hogan, Hall, and Nash signed with McMahon. I was insanely happy, I was overjoyed to see my childhood hero once again in McMahon-land. The net fan side of me was telling me that this is bad for the WWF, VERY bad, but I set that aside for a bit and became a kid again. It was great. I loved Hogan vs. The Rock at Wrestlemania. I was even impressed that Hogan laid down for Rocky. When Hogan came out in the Red n’ Yella, I was marking out, even if I knew that it would lead to months and months of sucktitude. Nostalgia had me by the balls.

Nostalgia doesn’t last though, people. Again, Hogan’s true suckyness is beginning to shine through, and it was culminated with him winning the WWF title at Backlash. The Internet was enraged. I WAS enraged. I couldn’t believe the WWF would try something like this. But sitting here today, I’m supporting the WWF’s decision.

Why am I supporting Hogan’s title reign? It’s simple people. The Hulkamania craze WILL die. Look what happened to him in WCW. Nostalgia got him over for only so long, then he had to turn heel to get people to care about him again. It will happen again, the nostalgia WILL die. “HOGAN SUCKS!” chants will once again fill the arenas. People will become bored of him and his crappy matches… but not just yet. The nostalgia hasn’t died yet, and that’s obvious. Hogan is one of the most over faces, if not the most over face on the Smackdown roster (with the Rock’s absence).

Think about it people, now is the best time for Hogan to be champion. We all know he wants one more title reign before he FINALLY hangs up the boots and goes back to his palace in Florida. Let’s have that reign NOW, when people actually care about him, while the NOSTALGIA is still at its peak. Why have the title reign months from now, when people are sick of the man? I’m not saying this title reign will be good, but this is the most opportune time for the reign.

On the flip side, this title reign is merely feeding Hulk Hogan’s ego. The title reign will truly be a travesty, and I’m looking forward to a month of boredom, as The Undertaker and Hogan will be feuding over the Undisputed gold. As bad as HHH vs Hogan was, Taker vs. Hogan will be 100 times worse… hell, it was a bad match back in 1991, when both were in their “prime.” Sadly, Vince McMahon is as much of a Hulk Hogan mark now as I was when I was a kid, so even if Hogan’s ego weren’t so big, we’d still probably see another Hogan title reign. As much as this Hogan reign will probably suck, it all boils down to one thing: Nostalgia. This Hulkamania nostalgia craze will die out, and when it does, we’ll all be happy we got this title reign out of the way. I REALIZE how much this will suck, but Hogan holding the title one last time is inevitable. Its best to get it out of the way, while the nostalgia is still running wild through the fans veins, instead of boring them to sleep.
