Im sure you've heard about this today, but I'd just like to say, that while the amount will definitely get reduced down significantly (at least it better be) there is no way that PM is liable that much for 1 woman's problems. The jury in LA must have been high or something to award that much. I dont have a problem with suing tobacco companies, but to this extent is just utterly stupid..

Wow. What does this tell us, kids?

Smoke cigarettes and become one of the wealthiest people in the world!!

Too bad that by the time it became a problem for me if I started, suing tobacco companies won't work anymore.

I hate lawsuits like this.

If you smoke, drink, do drugs, or in anyway ingest a chemical that is harmful to your body, that is your CHOICE. You and you alone are responsible for that choice, and the consequences it may have years down the road.

Fucking parasites.

I hold the same position for suing gunmakers for people just being stupid.

Ahhhhhhhh....... One step closer to being a billionaire.

This is really stupid. If I drink way too much Coke and it rots my teeth can I sue them for billions? They never told me it would do that. For shame Coca-Cola.

It's called common fucking sense, if you smoke you might get cancer. You should not be able to sue someone for choices that you made. This is just more of the "Pass the buck" mentality that is running rampant in America.

Everything wrong with this country is summed up right in this damn lawsuit. If you are dumb enough to smoke to an early grave you are going to pay. You sleep on the bed you make.

You don't understand. If someone starts smoking today and develops cancer from it, THEN you can say its their own fault because they knew of the risk. But this lady started smoking 47 years ago. While smoking back then was known to be unhealthy, the extent of the damage it does was kept from the public by the tobacco companies. Back then people DIDN'T know the risks and they weren't told that, oh by the way, smoking will kill you. By the time they found out, they were too deep into a nicotine addiction to stop.

It's the tobacco companies own fucking fault for hiding how unhealthy smoking is, and for keeping people addicted by adding nicotine.

You better start drinking before someone beats you to it (re: ME)...

I think someone should start drinking a gallon of milk a day every day for a while and then claim they got sick because of the Got Milk campaigns and how everyone says milk is supposed to be good for you.

Im not saying Im a PETA supporter, I like my share of red meat, but it reeks of possible lawsuit..

A while back at work these two guys were talking in the break room about how the human race was the only species that drinks another animals milk. I looked at them funny and said (paraphrasing), "So? We're the only species to send a man to the moon. We're the only species to have a welfare state. We're the only species to construct a national interstate system. Etc."

Of course they took this response a tad better than my other retort to them later on. During the Cincinnati riots a year or so ago one of them was going off about how the PO-lice always kill young black men. I rolled my eyes up at him and he got on my case. I said if there really is a conspiracy by the government to wipe out young black men then they're not doing a very good job at it. I then suggested going through the private sector since the crime stats show that young black men are doing a better job than the PO-lice at killing other young black men.

He didn't take too kindly to my words...

Jackass. Smoking has been known to kill since AT LEAST the 1500s. If you didn't fucking understand that four decades ago, it's YOUR OWN FUCKING FAULT for being a FUCKING RETARD and the tobacco companies have nothing to do with it.

Goddamn fuckheaded liberal scum.

Marney-

You need to calm down. Go have a cigarette. ^_^

How can they prove this lady got lung cancer from smoking cigarettes? I mean don't some people just get lung cancer out of the blue?

There's nothing sadder than someone who knows they're wrong and has nothing remotely intelligent to say, but still makes an ass out of themselves anyway. Seek therapy, cunt.

Actually, it was known in Shakespeare's time that smoking caused bad breath, worse teeth, and a persistent cough later in life. It was a while until science formalized the dangers, but the general hazards of smoking have indeed been known for centuries.

Besides, no one else should be responsible for a choice willingly made by a person. A stupid, uninformed choice is still their choice.

Guest Ozymandias

True, but they kept them addicted to something they KNEW would kill people. That's not unlike holding someone's head underwater. Nobody made tobacco companies add so much nicotine and make cigarettes harder to kick then heroin, they made the choice to keep people addicted to cigarettes and now they should have to pay for it.

Guest Agent of Oblivion

Harder to kick than heroin? Are you drunk? Quitting smoking doesn't drive people to rob for a fix, or have overwhelming withdrawl symptoms like nightmares, projectile vomiting, profuse sweating, hallucinations, loss of motor skills and balance, etc.

Besides, nicotine occurs naturally in tobacco, and always has. It's not just some new additive they stuck in cigarettes 50 years ago to hook people. No one HAS to smoke, and they can quit if they want. There's absolutely no reason someone with the money to smoke isn't able to quit. There's patches, gum, inhalers, all kinds of whatzits and doodads to help someone quit. Fuck it, just go cold turkey, step down, there's a million ways to quit. No one aside from the truly pathetic and depraved is unable to quit.

Guest Ozymandias
Posted

I didn't say it had the same characteristics of heroin, but it IS harder to quit.

The nicotine levels of cigarettes are raised tremendously by tobacco companies. THAT's the problem, they manipulated nicotine levels in tobacco to make it near impossible to quit. They made that choice and now they are paying for it.

And quitting smoking is easier said than done.

Well, whose fault is it for them smoking?

A big company trying to make money..

or:

The consumer who walks into the store, puts money on the counter, requests the pack, opens it, pulls one out, puts it in their mouth, lights it, and inhales.

It's no secret that nicotine is addictive, and smoking is dangerous, there's no reason someone should be able to sue the tobacco companies and win for that reason. Unless of course, this person started smoking back in the days of Columbus, and there's a very good chance that they're dead now.

BTW, Cletus, "cunt" and "bitch" are gender-specific insults, and we made the policy decision a while ago to treat them like insults against race or ethnicity. I understand your desire to respond to insults in a similar fashion, but do keep them above the belt.

Not now it isn't. 47 years ago things were different. Tobacco companies had ads featuring "doctors" espousing the safety of cigarettes.

You can argue about whose fault it is for someone to smoke, but the fact is is tobacco companies are purposely keeping people addicted to something that is deadly and there is no excusing that. If they only sold cigarettes there wouldn't be a problem. But they sell cigarettes with incredible amounts of nicotine in them, DESIGNED for the sole purpose of keeping people addicted to something that will kill them.

That's wrong any way you look at it.

There's been warnings on Cigarattes packs since the early 60's. If this stupid bitch wasn't smart enough to know smoking can cause cancer than she deserves to speak with a voice box.

She started smoking in the mid-50's and was already heavily addicted by the "early-60's".

SO FUCKING QUIT!

Goddamn, even I smoke, and I'm not blaming the tobacco companies over this shit, I can't run a mile without hacking and wheezing, that's my own fucking fault for liking to smoke, not some guy I've never met running a machine, or a bunch of rich assholes sitting in a boardroom.

I like smoking. I like the taste, I like the smell, I like how it feels to smoke a cigarette after sex, a meal, and waking up in the morning. If I didn't, I wouldn't smoke. Believe me, I've got the willpower.

Guest Ozymandias
Posted

Believe me, you would. Wait until you try to quit. You'll be in for quite a surprise.

EDIT: And I don't mean that in a crass way. I wouldn't wish addiction on anyone. But EVERYBODY who has ever died from years of smoking had thought at one time that they had the willpower to quit at any time they liked.

Guest Agent of Oblivion

That's something I'm not even worrying about. Smoking will probably kill me, I just don't give a shit.
