Guest MrRant Report post Posted October 5, 2002 Granted that I am only able to watch Enterprise like every other week because of work but I feel it holds up very well to the both the original series and The Next Generation (which are my two favorites) in the way that Star Trek is about exploring, human/alien interaction with some action mixed in. I really enjoyed the meeting with the Romulans last week but that seemed to have been ripped off from the book where Kirks father and Capt. April meet the Romulans on a shakedown cruise of the Enterprise of the original series and they get a mine attached to them too. Outside of that and the opening theme (not an orchestra like all the others) it has been very faithful. I didn't really care for Voyager because it was an action show and not too much of the actual Star Trek. I enjoyed DS9 but it was hard to watch a show whose premise is exploration having people sit in one spot. Your thoughts.
Guest Ravenbomb Report post Posted October 5, 2002 I don't think they should have an actor who is known for another series play the captain. I saw an episode and I seriously thought he was going to Leap at the end.
Guest areacode212 Report post Posted October 5, 2002 I watched a few episodes last season, and I really didn't care for it very much. There wasn't anything especially wrong with it, but it's basically the SAME THING we've already seen three times over--a crew on a starship bridge staring at a huge screen. And the middle seasons of TNG pretty much perfected that kind of show, with better writers (i.e., Ron Moore). Personally, DS9 was my all-time favorite ST, and I consider it to be one of the best dramas ever. Since by its nature, it relied less on a "Monster of the Week" formula, there was more room for ongoing drama. You didn't fly away from the planet at the end of the episode. All your problems were STILL THERE, so even though each episode featured a different story, there was still a continuing, overall saga. It may have been less "exploratory" than the other Treks in a literal sense, in terms of subject matter, there was a lot of area covered in DS9 that the other series barely touched, like religion, politics, etc. I even loved the early seasons, which many people found boring, because I liked how they built up all this backstory for the Bajorans and their conflicts with the Cardassians. The last few seasons of DS9 just kicked so much ass, and there was a lot of great character development. I loved how Damar went from being Dukat's annoying lackey to a hero who turned against the Dominion, and how Kira, the former Bajoran "freedom fighter", ended up training her old Cardassian enemies. I loved that motherfucking show, and I can't wait until the DVDs go on sale next year. ST fans complain that it "wasn't Trek", because it was dark & violent and that showed that humanity hadn't really outgrown all of its current problems, as Roddenberry had envisioned. But that was part of its appeal to me...I could relate to it much more because of its gritty, dirty world of backstabbing and conflicts, more than I could relate to the sparkling corridors of the NCC-1701-D. Guest MrRant Report post Posted October 5, 2002 I enjoyed the first episodes of DS9 and didn't mind the grit of the show I just like exploring :-). I just prefer less action and more of the exploration in of humanity etc that the original series and Gene Roddenberry came up with. I like dealing with issues and looking beyond it. That is why I enjoy Star Trek vastly compared to Star Wars because I like Gene Roddenberry's future, a future with problems but the goodness and kindess of humanity (alienity whatever)prevails and mistakes are learned and hopefully not repeated. Guest Ravenbomb Report post Posted October 5, 2002 yeah, DS9 was so gritty it had a baseball game between the crew and a buch of look-alike aliens! That was RAW and REAL and GRIIIIIIIIIITTY!!!
Guest areacode212 Report post Posted October 5, 2002 Well, yeah, when it tried to be light-hearted (Vic Fontaine, anything focusing on the fucking Ferengi), it did suck, except for the Tribbles episode.
Guest Ravenbomb Report post Posted October 5, 2002 oh, well nothing can suck with tribbles in it. I'd gladly sit through Undertaker vs. Mable in a mexican beer gut match if it had tribbles in it
Guest brokentusk16 Report post Posted October 5, 2002 Though not as great at TNG, Enterprise is much better than the orginal series and Voyager put together. i say give it until season 3 and then we can get a real long-term feel for it.
Guest Ravenbomb Report post Posted October 5, 2002 yeah, Voyager sucked mega-balls. "Oh, look, our captain is female now, you've all gotta overlook the fact that the show sucks!"
Guest MrRant Report post Posted October 5, 2002 yeah, Voyager sucked mega-balls. "Oh, look, our captain is female now, you've all gotta overlook the fact that the show sucks!" I actually think that was half the problem. I'm not a sexist but it just seemed... wrong. I think she was written to be overly a strong woman and to try and make her equal to Kirk, Picard, etc the others just seemed to command respect.
Guest areacode212 Report post Posted October 5, 2002 God, don't get me started on a Voyager rant (though I'm too sleepy to get worked up, don't worry). Actually, season 4 (the one that introduced Seven of Nine) was really good, but for the most part, it just sucked ass. The writing was terrible--the actors (other than Jeri Ryan & Robert Picardo) just weren't given anything good to work with. From what I understand, they all pretty much hated working on the show. Ron Moore (the awesome TNG & DS9 writer) did a cool interview for fandom.com where he described some interesting ideas for Voyager. It's too bad that he was basically forced off the show. Guest Ravenbomb Report post Posted October 5, 2002 well, if you keep doing new versions of a show, eventually it's gonna suck mega-balls. Just look at the Power Rangers and Scooby Doo
Guest DrTom Report post Posted October 5, 2002 Voyager was only worth watching for one reason: hottie Seven of Nine. (Actually, the doctor became the best character on the show the last couple years, which is pretty sad when you think about it.) Enterprise is only worth watching for hottie T'Pol. Jolene Blalock should be required to wear a bikini as her official Starfleet uniform.
Guest saturnmark4life Report post Posted October 6, 2002 i'm not a massive star trek twat or anything, but the main problem i have with enterprise is the theme tune. GOOD GOD. Totally cheapens the show.
Guest MrRant Report post Posted October 7, 2002 Yeah isn't that like Rod Stewart? Why The Fuck is Rod Stewart doing a theme song for STAR TREK?!?!
Guest saturnmark4life Report post Posted October 7, 2002 i dunno who it is, sounds more nu-grunge than Rod Stewart, some vomitous syrup in the vein of the calling or nickelback.
