Guest cabbageboy Report post Posted February 28, 2002 I will admit to being biased here, since I am from Louisville and am a U of L grad. It was so great seeing them beat the overrated, barely trained street thugs known as Cincinnati last night. They played a great game and I was really proud of them. It was almost like a wrestling storyline, with the courageous underdog babyface defeating the vicious heel. My friend Chris came over to watch the game and by the end we were jumping up and down. Anyone else see the game last night? Anyone else hate Cincy as much as I do? To give you a rough idea, in 2000 I threatened to jump off the Humanities Building on the U of L campus if Cincinnati won the national title (they were ranked #1 too). Thankfully Kenyon Martin broke his leg and they ended up losing in the second round to Tulsa, so the world will never know if I would have done it or not. I am making no such vow this year however, even though Cincy has no chance in hell of winning the tournament, and I don't care how highly they are ranked. Guest Choken One Report post Posted February 28, 2002 I love it when a Lousy team wins a game over a top ranked team and begins to think they are hot shit...and watch them collaspe next week. What's Florida State and Ball St. done since their Upsets? ONE win over a great team does not make you the top dog...
Guest cabbageboy Report post Posted February 28, 2002 Oh, I fully realize that U of L will probably not make the NCAA tourney this year. Hell they might even lose at home to Charlotte on Saturday. I don't think they are outright lousy like FSU is (though they were last year). If they beat Charlotte and win one game in the conference tourney they'll be about 18-12...in 2000 Wisconsin and UNC both made the final 4 and had 18-12 records. Not in my wildest dreams would I imagine Louisville making the final 4 this year, but I think anyone would admit that they would be better in the final 4 than Wisconsin. Guest Choken One Report post Posted February 28, 2002 Didn't Wisconsn have the tOP rpi THAT year? That's why they made it along with going deep in the conf. tourny...UNC went deep in the tourny and was a big name...and it was in 1999 Wisc went to the final 4. Guest brownsdawg208 Report post Posted March 1, 2002 well, hopefully this loss lights a fire in cincy's ass. It doesn't really look good for the tourney, though. Anyways, I had no idea that the rivalry is that strong down there. It hasn't really been a big deal in cincy since the 80's. btw don't you just fuckin hate kentucky? How can a team that proves itself to be so bad so consistently this season remain in the top 15? Because Dicky V marks out for them? They shouln't even be ranked. Guest cabbageboy Report post Posted March 1, 2002 Oh where do I start? Wisconsin sure as hell was not in the Final 4 in 1999. The Final 4 that year was UCONN (who won it), Duke, Michigan St., and Ohio St. Further, I think the final 8 was those four plus Gonzaga, Temple, Kentucky, and St. John's. Wisconsin was definitely NOT #1 in the RPI in 2000, they were crap. In fact they really had no business being in the tournament and certainly showed no signs of being able to beat the teams they beat to get to the Final 4. And once they got there they had a dreadful game against Michigan St. that set basketball back 40 years.
Guest Choken One Report post Posted March 1, 2002 Well, whatever. Wisconsin history is not really implanted in my head anyways. Yes, Brownsdogg is right...Louisville has just been another Houston or Ala-Birghmanham(sp?) to us for the last 10 years with Crum or Pitino. Yes, Kentucky just beat by some really shitty teams like Vandy and still remain 9-15 everyweek. Come tourny time...they will fall hard. I will laugh when those cincy fearing rednecks crash and burn. Guest MarvinisaLunatic Report post Posted March 1, 2002 Virginia beat Duke 87-84, which means: A) Maryland has the #1 Seed in the ACC Tourney, Duke #2 B) Maryland has to play an upset minded Virginia in Cole this Weekend, the last Game at Cole Field House. Guest cabbageboy Report post Posted March 1, 2002 "Louisville has just been another Houston or Ala-Birmingham to us for the last 10 years with Crum or Pitino." Oh really? Let's review a few things here. Past ten years or so right? 1992: Louisville made 2nd round, Cincy Final 4. 1993: Louisville makes Sweet 16, Cincy makes Elite 8. 1994: Louisville makes Sweet 16, I don't recall what Cincy did but it wasn't much. 1995: U of L lost first round to Memphis, dunno what Cincy did but it wasn't much. 1996: U of L made Sweet 16, Cincy Elite 8. 1997: U of L made Elite 8, Cincy lost 2nd round. 1998: U of L sucked bad, Cincy lost 2nd round. 1999: U of L lost to Creighton 1st round, Cincy lost to someone in the 2nd again but I forgot who. Temple maybe? 2000: U of L lost to Gonzaga 1st round, Cincy lost to Tulsa in the 2nd. 2001: U of L sucked and forced Crum to retire, Cincy made Sweet 16. So really if you take a look there Cincy hasn't had a whole lot more success than Louisville over the past decade. I guess Cincy has dominated U of L in the regular season but they are the choke artists of all time in the tourney. It's very simple guys: to win in the tourney you have to have some skill and talent and not a bunch of goons. Against Louisville the other night I saw ONE real ballplayer (Logan) and a bunch of street thugs masquerading as basketball players. This is why they can't win the tourney. They either run in to someone who is flat out better than them and has more skill (UNC in 1993, Stanford last year) or runs into a team that stands up to them physically and fights back (Miss. St. in 1996, Iowa St. in 1997, W. Virginia in 98). As far as it being a major rivalry, maybe to Cincy fans it isn't anymore. To U of L fans, Cincy is basically the Great Satan. We seriously hate Cincinnati. In regards to KY, yeah they can't put 3 good games together in a row. Given the amount of talent Tubby has and the results he has produced, I wouldn't be shocked to see him fired once UK loses to someone like Pepperdine in the first round. Tubby has proved to be a Sweet 16 coach at a Final 4 school. They usually stay ranked highly because they have lost close games this year. They can still win the SEC tourney and turn it around, but who knows with this bunch? The amusing thing is that I have talked about U of L and UK and neither are even the best team in the state. Western Ky is by far....they are 25-3 and beat UK at Rupp by 12. I really wouldn't want them in my bracket.
Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted March 1, 2002 Cincinnati always seems to play worse has the season progresses. The players probably grow tired of Bob "Mr.Academia" Huggins.
Guest Eraser2K2 Report post Posted March 1, 2002 Bob Huggins is a great coach. He's won 6 or 7 straight conference championships. Has anyone but Wooden ever done that? Kentucky was just about as good at this point last year as they were last year. But they went on to win the SEC tournament (I think), got a #2 seed, and went to the Elite Eight (again, I think). They may not be playing well right now, but they are usually more of a tournament team than regular season team. Cincinnati is a good team. It takes a lot to win 20 straight games. Nobody else has done it this year. If they can get the #1 seed, they might go the Final Four. It wouldn't surprise me. The Elite Eight is more likely though, and thats still a great season. Guest Choken One Report post Posted March 1, 2002 Sadly...I will call Cincy dropping out in Sweet 16 if we go the west region but if they give us East...we're good to go.
Guest cabbageboy Report post Posted March 2, 2002 No one but Cincy has won 20? Take a look at the top 25 poll...nearly all of those teams have won 20. By the way, for the record UK lost to USC in the Sweet 16 last year....the day after U of L announced Pitino was the new coach. Heh. The thing about Cincinnati is that they mostly beat up on jobbers. Aside from Marquette I can't think of any quality teams they have beaten (and don't say Mississippi St....they suck, I've seen them). Can anyone see Cincy beating Duke, Maryland, or Kansas with the money on the line? As overrated as I think Cincy is, wanna know who the most overrated team is? Alabama. I can't think of a more unimpressive team that has won the SEC in recent memory. In the NCAA tourney they are a 2nd round elimination waiting to happen.
