Leftovers from past gimmicks...

Recommended Posts

Guest AndrewTS

I'd heard that Faarooq may end up going back to the Ron Simmons name. Some silly reason relating to the fact that the al Quaida terrorists were Muslims. However, it made me think of how outdated it was.

When he came to the WWF in the gladiator-style gear, he did a Muhammed Ali-like promo saying Ron Simmons was dead, and there is only Faarooq Asad. The gear and gimmick didn't correlate with the name...but it did when he formed the Nation of Domination. Obviously a take on the Nation of Islam--a black muslim organization. Yet he kept the name after the break up...while tagging with Scorpio...while joining Bradshaw as an Acolyte--Undertaker's "followers" in the Ministry. They stayed together and the "Acolyte" name made no sense when they were just a poker-playing, beer-drinking tag team who swore and kicked ass.

New fans may also not know what Triple H's name stands for, or why his move is called "The Pedigree." It's a leftover from the Greenwich Blueblood days, and he kept it even through the D-X days. Although occasionally "Hunter" or "Helmsley" is brought up.

Wrestler characters often progress slowly without a complete repackaging. So bits and pieces of them will be left over even if they make no sense, or seem contradictory. Any other examples you can think of?

I can almost guarantee that most new fans don't know what the second "H" is.

Goldust still has the Curtain Call and Golden Globes, long after the movie thing died out. He had the same thing in 97 with the Curtian Call and no movies.

Well Goldust and Booker did do the "At the Movies" skits and Goldust has parodied some movie characters. So I'd say the movie thing is still there.

This may be stretching, but Kane as the Fake Diesel only wore one glove, as is customary for Diesel. Now as Kane he still only wears one glove.

hmm...

When the Undertaker was the dead man his no-selling made sense.

He hasn't quit that yet.

Yeah...I don't think I've heard the "Hearst" mentioned at all in years.

Although Goldust has had the same basic look except for the time he hooked up with Luna--even though it's a completely different character.

Another obvious one I should have thought of since I brought up the Ministry--the Undertaker. A demin-wearing biker talking up about respect blah blah and snorting all the time doesn't really make me think of a mortician. The name didn't make much sense as a zombie or as a cult leader either.

Very subtle...but yeah, I'd say that counts. Since only Nash and Michael Jackson off the top of my head wore only one glove.

Well, as a cult leader it was kind of cool.

Paul Bearer made more sense for his character than Undertaker did for the zombie

When the Undertaker first debuted he put people in body bags and was shown making caskets so the name fit then. He was just an undead mortician.

Yeah, then it moved away from that and got into goofy stuff like lightning bolts and the infamous Summerslam casket match vs. Yoko where he "died" and was resurrected.

Well, Chrstian is the name from the brood, now that he is/was an Un-American. It doesn't fit well, nor do the tights. Same with Edge and his tights.

Benoit's finisher is the Crippler Crossface but he isn't the Crippler. Bradshaw's finisher is the Closeline from Hell but he isn't in hell anymore..wait, he is on RAW, nevermind.

Well, until fairly recently, the APA stood for Acolytes Protection agency, when they hadn't been acolytes of Taker since forever. Christian's finicher is still called the 'unprettier', which, if I'm not incorrect, is a reference back to the E/C Tiger Beat wannabe days.

the Acolytes were with the Jackyl (aka Don Callis) first

Some people's names are Christian (my middle name is, I know of some whose first name is), so the name shouldn't really count

Bradshaw has the Texas stuff again, does that count?

HHH is in real life the lover of Stephanie and a political mastermind...

just like the storyline in late 99/early 2000.

Someone has a problem seperating fantasy from reality.

u know what bothers me and i found really stupid, is that when HHH is coming to the ring, they put his name in the little box as 'TRIPLE H' and in his TitanTron too....

i mean Triple H is just for when people say it, when it's written it should be 'HHH'

right?

it has been bothering me for YEARS~!!!!

i just needed to say that

:D

naw I think "Triple H" is a better writing. We write HHH cause we're lazy and don't want to type out Triple HHH cause he doesn't deserve our time.

HGH is more descriptive at several levels...

Although his pornstar gimmick is never mentioned anymore, Val Venis' finisher is still called the Money Shot and he's still announced as being from Las Vegas.

Benoit's finisher is the Crippler Crossface but he isn't the Crippler.

He's still the same "Crippler" character. Didn't one of his WWF tights have "Crippler" on it.

Lionsault for Jericho is more apt. Jericho hasn't been "Lion Heart" (The "Paragon of Virtue" good-guy vanillia face he was before turning heel in WCW) in a while, a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGG while

Actually, he was Christian Cage in the indies, so at least the name has endured for a while now.

LaParkaYourCar: Right...blah, SumSlam was Taker vs. Taker--my bad.

Bubba Freakin' Ray wrote "HHH" on the table. If Bubba doesn't think it's worth his time to write the full thing then why should we?

Some gimmick changes without changing names

"Ted DiBiase" goes from being a run-of-the-mill grappler to one of the wealthiest men in the country

"Steve Austin" goes from being an arrogant Hollywood wannabe to a dissgruntled, beer guzzling, cursing piece of Texas white trash

"Rocky Miaiva" goes from being a Samoan/Hawaiian wearing, clean cut blue chipper to essientially a parody of the Deion Sanders/Reggie Jackson/Barry Bonds type of black athlete, the brash, arogant, first person using, wealth flaunting type of jerks

"Hulk Hogan" goes from standard "big heel" to an overly excited charasmiatic babyface who stands for everything virtuous to an aging Californian/Floridian who just does whatever the hell he wants (the character Hogan has been since turning at BAB '96)

Hardcore Holly stayed Hardcore Holly even after he stopped competing for that title...and wrestling any such matches. Who the hell came up with that name for him anyway?

And Steve Austin often used the Stun Gun and Million Dollar Dream in PPV matches.
