I won tickets to a Rules of Attraction screening

Recommended Posts

I won tickets from Rock 101 in Houston. The screening is this Thursday, but the movie doesn't really appeal to me that much from what I've seen of the previews. Should I go since it's free?

If you have nothing else to do, yeah. Personally, it looks like it'll either be a brilliantly wicked satire, or an overblown, heavy handed piece of shit. I'm there, in other words.

I remember this movie as being the one with the poster with all the stuffed animals humping each other. Im going to guess its probably a funny movie, so Id go, especially if its free.

Dude, it's from the fucks that brought us American Psycho, so it's bound to be fucked up.

See it.

I really really wanted to see this movie when I heard they were making it, because I'm a big Bret Easton Ellis fan. Then I saw the previews, and am now utterly ambivalent.

But I would defintitely go if I were you and had free tickets.

I read American Psycho some years ago. It was brilliant in parts, but Ellis was in deserpate need of a (better) editor. He stretched the gag a little long. I felt the same way about the film version.

There are incredibly boring passages in American Psycho. Yes, in theory it's funny when you spend 5 pages describing what someone is wearing, but in practice its ridiculous to read. And when it's done throughout the whole book it becomes sadistically tedious. But Rules of Attraction generally avoids such excesses. I think its his most well-written work with Glamorama a close second. The only thing I didn't like was the ending. Though, I was also annoyed with the whole "I'm so bored with sex" attitude that Sean Bateman displays at times. How I wish I could relate to that sentiment.

The commercials for RoA suck, but that is more of a reflection on Lion's Gate's clueless marketing than on the movie's quality. The internet trailers (done by the director himself) were fucking great and have me indescribably excited to see this.

To think, there might actually be an Ellis adaption that approaches the original book's quality.

And on the subject of the book, I don't know if it's his best (that would be Glamorama), but it's the one I enjoyed reading the most out of all his books. From all accounts, Roger Avary kept all the book's best parts (except the Patrick Bateman cameo).

On another note, Avary bought the rights to Glamorama and wants to make it with the actors who play Victor and Lauren in RoA. That will be....interesting.

You're right Glamorama is probably the better book, but I enjoyed Rules of Attraction more. You definitely did a better job of convincing me to see this movie than the commercials did.
