Guest Marshall Report post Posted October 6, 2002 I got the new Sopranos episodes from KaZaA and I want to burn them so that they are VCD using Nero. I have done this before with .mpg files and it works fine, but these are .avi, which never work for me even with DIVX installed. When I add the files it either tells me that they are invalid files or it allow start converting and then freeze about a quarter of the way in. What can I do to get passed this? AVI is a video file that uses Microsoft's compression technology. DivX is an extension of an AVI file that uses different codecs for compression of audio and video, but the extension ".avi" is still there. The DivX AVI files are much smaller than MPEG files. Okay, I downloaded a movie off of Kazza last night (Barber Shop)...about 218 MB of space...but all I received was a :05 clip of green distortion. The clip information stated the movie at a length of 1:47:00 (or something like that), but I instead got that clip of crap. Tried DivX, RealOne, WindowsMP...none of them work in opening the movie correctly. My question is: Was my movie defective, or is my codecs outdated? I love DivX for watching, but I can never get the bitrates right when making my own so I have to resort to MPEG's. Trivial info, I know, but since at least a few in this thread seem somewhat-versed in DivX, is there an easy way to find out "good" bitrates? I've read and re-read the tutorials on VCDHelp.com and Doom9.net but they all use different software with different results and I really don't like having to uninstall and reinstall all this different stuff. Plus the only bitrate calculator I've found is for DivX 4, not 5 (I'd really like to master XviD since its open source, but its hard to find documentation on that, and DivX 3.11 messes up my computer so I had to get rid of it). Should I just bite the bullet and just install Doom9's program pack? For reference, I use DVD Decrypter (http://www.dvddecrypter.com) and sometimes cladDVD for ripping, DVD2AVI for initial conversion and then VirtualDub for final conversion and getting the sound in.
