Guest Marshall Report post Posted October 6, 2002 I got the new Sopranos episodes from KaZaA and I want to burn them so that they are VCD using Nero. I have done this before with .mpg files and it works fine, but these are .avi, which never work for me even with DIVX installed. When I add the files it either tells me that they are invalid files or it allow start converting and then freeze about a quarter of the way in. What can I do to get passed this? Guest Kibagami Report post Posted October 7, 2002 .avi files are evil. Every now and then I get one that won't play on Windows Media Player, Real Player, you name it. What do you guys use for those? S.
Guest Marshall Report post Posted October 7, 2002 Get TMPGE to convert to .mpeg and www.vcdhelp.com will is a huge help too. Tried that and it just crashed the same as when I play it. AVI files are evil. Why trade them on KaZaA when MPEG is smaller and better quaility?
Guest Eagan469 Report post Posted October 7, 2002 Why trade them on KaZaA when MPEG is smaller and better quaility? Actually, you're comparing the wrong things. AVI is a video file that uses Microsoft's compression technology. DivX is an extension of an AVI file that uses different codecs for compression of audio and video, but the extension ".avi" is still there. The DivX AVI files are much smaller than MPEG files. The same cannot be said for AVI files without DivX compression. Got it?
Guest Jobber of the Week Report post Posted October 8, 2002 Does it play on any other computers? I guess what I'm asking here is, are you sure you don't have a bad file?
Guest razazteca Report post Posted October 8, 2002 maybe the swap file is fragmented too much?

Guest bravesfan Report post Posted October 27, 2002 On-topic question... Okay, I downloaded a movie off of Kazza last night (Barber Shop)...about 218 MB of space...but all I received was a :05 clip of green distortion. The clip information stated the movie at a length of 1:47:00 (or something like that), but I instead got that clip of crap. Tried DivX, RealOne, WindowsMP...none of them work in opening the movie correctly. My question is: Was my movie defective, or is my codecs outdated? And if the movie was defective, can anyone point me to any good "movie rip" sites?
Guest Eagan469 Report post Posted October 28, 2002 The latest version of DivX is 5.02. You can grab the bundle here: http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail.php3?...3?fid=995526772 If that doesn't work, the file is most likely corrupt.

Guest evenflowDDT Report post Posted November 1, 2002 http://www.mnsi.net/~jschlic1/ AVI2VCD. Download it. Love it. Does that work with DivX-compressed AVI's? I love DivX for watching, but I can never get the bitrates right when making my own so I have to resort to MPEG's. Trivial info, I know, but since at least a few in this thread seem somewhat-versed in DivX, is there an easy way to find out "good" bitrates? I've read and re-read the tutorials on VCDHelp.com and Doom9.net but they all use different software with different results and I really don't like having to uninstall and reinstall all this different stuff. Plus the only bitrate calculator I've found is for DivX 4, not 5 (I'd really like to master XviD since its open source, but its hard to find documentation on that, and DivX 3.11 messes up my computer so I had to get rid of it). Should I just bite the bullet and just install Doom9's program pack? For reference, I use DVD Decrypter (http://www.dvddecrypter.com) and sometimes cladDVD for ripping, DVD2AVI for initial conversion and then VirtualDub for final conversion and getting the sound in.
