Guest BifEverchad Report post Posted October 7, 2002 I'm currently reading Heavier than Heaven, Kurt Cobain's biography and Nirvana is on the mind more than usual. Its an awesome book by the way and I encourage anyone who lives Nirvana to pick it up, its a really good read. Anyways, I was just curious what everyone out there considers their favorite Nirvana album. Bif
Guest Chuck Woolery Report post Posted October 7, 2002 I'm a hopeless Unplugged mark, sadly, and I haven't heard much else on anything but MP3. P.S. 2 posts away, Bif.
Guest DrainYou42 Report post Posted October 8, 2002 Incesticide - It's a good mix of everything. Unplugged is a close second.
Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Report post Posted October 8, 2002 I want everyone to be proud of me for not saying the bad things that all come to mind and instead vote for the Unplugged album.
Guest godthedog Report post Posted October 8, 2002 it's all about 'in utero', baby, the primary reason i still like nirvana more than the pixies even though they ripped off the pixies.
Guest Sassquatch Report post Posted October 8, 2002 Listening to "Heart-Shaped Box", "Pennyroyal Tea" and "All Apologies" is when I decided that I liked "In Utero" more than my old favorite which was the Unplugged album.
Guest Youth N Asia Report post Posted October 8, 2002 Nevermind...the only great album in their entire overrated catalog. And I'm not counting live shows.
Guest Banky Report post Posted October 8, 2002 In Utero is head and shoulders better than anything Kurt Cobain has ever produced.
Guest Ozymandias Report post Posted October 8, 2002 In Utero is my favorite album by anybody. If all music could even approach the level of emotional honesty and heart on that record, then this world would be immeasurably better. And the music is fucking awesome too..... Guest Kinetic Report post Posted October 8, 2002 In Utero by far. Steve Albini's undeniable talent as a producer and absolute disdain for studio gloss suited Nirvana's sound well, allowing the grit and anguish present in the playing and Cobain's vocals to shine through. I can't even listen to Nevermind anymore, mostly because I've heard it hundreds of times already but also because the production just irks me. It's far too slick for that sort of band and I can't help but wonder if it would have been as well received had Butch Vig not overproduced the hell out of it. Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted October 8, 2002 Bleach, for me. The rest of them I don't really care for. Although I'm by no means a huge Nirvana fan. I just like a lot of the riffs on bleach.
Guest converge241 Report post Posted October 9, 2002 it was close but i went Utero just slightly over Bleach. The sound was just so much better on it, thanks to Albini. When Scnetless Apprentice kicks in , it sounds like the worlds going to hell, in a good way.
Guest evenflowDDT Report post Posted October 9, 2002 I'm not a huge Nirvana fan, but Bleach all the way for me. Given its low production budget, its sound is more raw, natural, and "grungy" than the rest of the albums. Nevermind is an overproduced, overplayed piece of hype, and although In Utero has my favorite Nirvana song ("Pennyroyal Tea") and some of their best songs ("All Apologies", "Heart-Shaped Box"), it also has some of their worst songs, with Cobain screaming random garbage over trashy riffs, and lets not forget my most hated metaphor in rock and roll, "Rape Me". "Bleach" also has some trademark "Cobain screaming random garbage", but the riffs, as Agent of Oblivion mentioned, sound a lot better. Plus, Bleach also features "About A Girl" (although their best version of this song is still the live Unplugged one) and "Love Buzz", my second and third favorite Nirvana songs. Guest Edwin MacPhisto Report post Posted October 9, 2002 Unplugged, with In Utero a close second. All the covers on Unplugged pull the album together, and there's not a down moment. I love In Utero, but there's a few tracks in the middle that, while lovely noise, don't capture Nirvana as I like them best. I will agree, however, that the beginning of "Scentless Apprentice" makes me think of the earth exploding. Sidenote: NME has the tracklisting for the greatest hits up. No real surprises, except that they pulled a lot more off Bleach than just "About A Girl." It is, as follows: 'You Know You're Right' 'About A Girl' 'Been A Son' 'Sliver' 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' 'Come As You Are' 'Lithium' 'In Bloom' 'Heart-Shaped Box' 'Pennyroyal Tea' 'Rape Me' 'Dumb' 'All Apologies' 'The Man Who Sold The World' Certainly a good survey, I guess. Guest DawnBTVS Report post Posted October 10, 2002 They could've added A LOT more onto the best of CD. No Love Buzz? I mean that was their first hit damnit. No Where Did You Sleep Last Night? No FUCKING POLLY.....good god did they miss A TON of stuff.
Guest Edwin MacPhisto Report post Posted October 10, 2002 I dunno...I guess for the intent, it works. Honestly, if you put Polly on there, you've got literally half of that album on the Greatest Hits. I still don't really see the market they're going for with this release. I'd be surprised if this goes gold, but we'll see how many completists and new fans get pulled in by "You Know You're Right."
