Ah, I love it. In addition to being able to play an old Tom Waits LP I've had for months (and found at a Sam Goody, of all places), I am now the proud owner of new vinyl copies of N.W.A.'s efil4zaggiN and Tori Amos' Under the Pink, neither artist who, until now, had been represented in my music collection. Anyone else know the joys of the turntable?

i've had a turntable since i was around 12, and i love it. my collection is kind of small, but the joy of listening to the beatles on vinyl is immeasurably greater than on cd. velvet underground is also better on vinyl, but not quite as better (if that makes sense).

the limited edition vinyl copies that lots of artists have been putting out for years are lots of fun. many times they'll be 2-disc gatefold sets just for the hell of it, & they'll have nice features not on the cds ('under the pink' is colored pink, 'siamese dream' is colored orange, 'exile in guyville' comes with a 1-page insert, 'hello nasty' is TRANSPARENT orange, etc).

::opens Amos LP::

Ooh, pretty.

Yeah, regardless of what I think of these records, I doubt I'll ever bother getting them on CD. You get such a warmer sound than on a disc. Plus, for the fetishist, they're a lot more fun.

yup. i got rid of my 'under the pink' cd cause i stopped listening to it after getting the lp. and i never plan on getting cd's of 'siamese dream', 'remain in light', or any of the other great vinyl albums i have.

Judging from one listen, Under the Pink is pretty good. That Hot Topic (where I bought it) sells vinyl is giving me a reason to go the mall more often.

glad to hear you're experiencing the music on vinyl. I have a few LPs and the sound quality is amazing, once you get past the scratches and pops. I'd take an LP over a CD anyday, but after 100 plays on each... the difference is going to show, unfortunately.

The Tom Waits LP I have (Heartattack and Vine), has its scratches and pops, but I love it. It has character.

i really should figure out that mysterious disc-shaped black thing with the needle sometime. Never used one. I agree they have character.

I started buying albums on vinyl when I found a couple of local stores that sold used copies rather cheaply, and I love it, especially as my collection is starting to look pretty good by now.

And I agree, albums on vinyl have character.

They're also way cheaper, usually. I've got a lot of Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Rush, and Doors on vinyl. That, and a Converge 7 inch I found somewhere.

not necessarily. new printings of lp's can run upwards of twenty bucks, and i've seen some go for thirty.

Prices vary. The Amos platter at Hot Topic was $9.99, but, at the same store, N.E.R.D.'s In Search Of was $18.99. Both were brand new copies.

Your Hot Topic sells vinyl? What kind of Hot Topic is that... everyone knows Hot Topics are just supposed to sell "punk" stickers to kids who listen to Blink 182 and think they're hardcore!

Anyway... I'm really torn on records. On one hand, I hate them because they're a pain in the ass to deal with, my record player is a piece of doodoo, and I don't even have a receiver so I have to run it through my laptop (which makes it sound even worse). On the other hand, its the only way to buy hip-hop and electronica singles. Not to mention all the indie punk stuff thats only on 7". Its kinda cool, yet at the same time so frustrating.

Re: Hot Topic. You forgot the goths. Can't forget them. And yeah, of the three Hot Topics in town, two of them sell vinyl.

I actually play mine through a tv, though I don't know if that's something you can do with older models.

I can't even find a record player. I've looked, too; going so far as to toy around with one in a thrift store for about an hour last month only to come to the crushing conclusion that it was a piece of shit. I'm still looking, though. My copies of Armed Forces and Rio will not have been purchased in vain!

Hmmmm.... I never considered this possibility; I'll have to try it when I go home (of course I have to first buy a new needle for my record player, which I've always found much harder to find than record players in general; Kinetic, I'd check Radio Shack, as that's where I got mine - an RCA something or other). How does this work, you just connect them into the audio line-ins on the TV?

Yep. You should be able to get a new stylus at Radio Shack, too (hell, the aforementioned Hot Topic--if they sell records--sells them, as well).

I got my turntable at Best Buy, fyi.
