In addition to being able to play an old Tom Waits LP I've had for months (and found at a Sam Goody, of all places), I am now the proud owner of new vinyl copies of N.W.A.'s efil4zaggiN and Tori Amos' Under the Pink, neither artist who, until now, had been represented in my music collection. Guest godthedog Report post Posted October 8, 2002 i've had a turntable since i was around 12, and i love it. my collection is kind of small, but the joy of listening to the beatles on vinyl is immeasurably greater than on cd. velvet underground is also better on vinyl, but not quite as better (if that makes sense). the limited edition vinyl copies that lots of artists have been putting out for years are lots of fun. many times they'll be 2-disc gatefold sets just for the hell of it, & they'll have nice features not on the cds ('under the pink' is colored pink, 'siamese dream' is colored orange, 'exile in guyville' comes with a 1-page insert, 'hello nasty' is TRANSPARENT orange, etc). Guest mesepher Report post Posted October 8, 2002 glad to hear you're experiencing the music on vinyl. I have a few LPs and the sound quality is amazing, once you get past the scratches and pops. What kind of Hot Topic is that... everyone knows Hot Topics are just supposed to sell "punk" stickers to kids who listen to Blink 182 and think they're hardcore! Anyway... I'm really torn on records. On one hand, I hate them because they're a pain in the ass to deal with, my record player is a piece of doodoo, and I don't even have a receiver so I have to run it through my laptop (which makes it sound even worse). On the other hand, its the only way to buy hip-hop and electronica singles. Not to mention all the indie punk stuff thats only on 7". Its kinda cool, yet at the same time so frustrating. I've looked, too; going so far as to toy around with one in a thrift store for about an hour last month only to come to the crushing conclusion that it was a piece of shit. I'm still looking, though. You should be able to get a new stylus at Radio Shack, too (hell, the aforementioned Hot Topic--if they sell records--sells them, as well). I got my turntable at Best Buy, fyi.
