This happened to me today as I won a Toronto Maple Leafs Alexander Mogilny hockey sweater. Apparently I overestimated how much people would bid for it.

It's not all bad though, I suppose - the auction is supposedly for charity, so I can't feel too bad. And it's not as bad as my friend who won one of those sattelite radio thingies for $200-300.

Anyone else have this happen?

I never had that problem, but I never bid more than I can actually afford, and never for something I don't really want. Although if it's for charity, that's at least a worthwhile exception.

I've had it where people retract bids leaving me as high bidder. I just retract my bid if i dont want it

I was bidding on a war games tape last week and i lost but then they retracted the bid so i was winning until they CHANGED THEIR MIND AND BID ON IT AGAIN! ARRGH! Anywho i hate when you lose an auction and they send you an email sending the auction is over. Its like just kick me when im down.

I seem to get a little crazy with e-bay. I hate to lose. If I bid on something, I'll probably watch it till the end, beating out anyone who tries touching what I want. I hate those loss notifications too, they usually come a day or two later which just rubs it in more.

I've won some pretty crappy stuff before, but I've never actually acccidentally won anything.

Once you put a bid in, I dont think you can claim accident..

No, you can never claim accident when you put in a bid. It's just that sometimes you think "it'd be nice to get this item at this price, but but surely someone will outbid me for it", and then you win it.

Anyways, the final price (with S+H) ended up around $90, or ~$135CDN, which probably isn't as good a price as you'd if you might get buying it at a sports memerobilia store, but if the proceeds go to charity, I can't really complain, I guess.

basically when i bid, i decide how much i am willing to spend on the item. I check to see how much the shipping and handling is and subtract that from my max bid and place the bid. so - if i am willing to spend 50bucks on the item and the guy charges $5 S&H then i'll put a max bid of 45. I never up my bid, keeps me out of a lot of trouble with the Girlfriend.
