Guest Ravenbomb Report post Posted October 11, 2002 Best: Raging Bull Worst: Rocky. It was an overrated peice of shit. THAT'S RIGHT! I called Rocky an overrated PEICE OF SHIT! Maybe I wouldn't hate it so much if the Oscars people had just left it alone and given the best picture award to Taxi Driver, or at least All the Presidents Men, but noooooooo! 'America needs a hero!' Oh yeah? Travis Bickle killed pimps and drug dealers, Rocky got beat up by a guy in boxer shorts. WHICH SOUNDS MORE HEROIC?!
Guest notJames Report post Posted October 11, 2002 Worst: I don't watch bad movies. Especially bad sports movies. How do you know if they are bad unless you watch them? Since you asked... It depends. Certain films telegraph the fact that they are schlocky Hollywood pap and therefore make it easy for me to avoid. Film ads that go 100mph but don't offer me a story I want to see clue you in pretty quickly. Pretty much 95% of the big blockbuster films are anathema to me. I'm very big on independent films, since they showcase stories and character actors moreso than special effects and big names. Take for example Formula 51. Now I like Sam Jackson and all, but the ads they've been showing don't tell me what the actual story is about... just a lot of fast cars, dizzyingly-quick edits, and loud crappy music. Sorry, I'll take a pass. I tried to make an exception for Moulin Rouge, which everybody swore by. But 12 minutes into the movie, I was bored senseless. Thank god I didn't pay for the rental. Certain actors are persona non grata with me, hence I don't watch their movies. Julia Roberts, Jim Carrey, Tom Cruise, Adam Sandler, Jennifer Love Hewitt (and pretty much all the disposable teen heartthrobs)... when I see them in adverts, I immediately change the channel in disgust. They cram these no-talent hacks into vehicle films tailor-made to cater to their one and only characterizations, and expect the mouth-breathing masses to just lap it up like so much vanilla ice cream laced with shit. This isn't an absolute rule, however, depending on the film. For example, Magnolia is a very powerful film and changed the way I saw Tom Cruise as an actor. Granted, he played an asshole, which pretty much fits my view of him, but PT Anderson was able to use him effectively. Ensemble casts tend to hide certain actors' flaws and create an environment which makes films enjoyable. I'm also torn on seeing PT Anderson's newest film Punch Drunk Love, which happens to star both Emily Watson (an actress I adore) and Adam Sandler (an "actor" I abhor). Reviews are mixed, but pretty much all of them say that Sandler subdues his over-the-top man-child persona and gives an impressive performance. Perhaps a Sunday matinee showing is in the future... The bottom line, however, is that I don't have a lot of disposable income at hand (owning a home and raising a 14-month-old will do that to you), so I'm extremely cautious about plunking down 9 ducats for wasted time. Even investing 3 or 4 bucks on a rental is a chore, so the movie has to a gem. Merely passable entertainment doesn't cut it with me. I also go by friend recommendations and certain movie reviewers. But more often than not, I can sniff out a shitty film 10 seconds into seeing an ad for it. Does that make me a film snob? Perhaps. But time is a precious commodity, so if I'm going to sit still for two hours, it better be worth it.

Guest WrestlingDeacon Report post Posted October 11, 2002 Here's my list from the last thread. 1) Rocky (I like all five really) 2) Major League 3) Longest Yard 4) The Natural 5) Slap Shot 6) Hoosiers 7) Raging Bull 8) Field of Dreams 9) Caddy Shack 10) Color of Money (which oddly is my second favorite movie of all time) As for bad sports movies, pretty much any sequel. Although, I do like all five Rocky's to a point and you have to dig the Bad News Bears go to Japan for Anotonio Anoki beating the shit out of Tony Curtis.
