Guest Brush with Greatness Posted March 1, 2002 Report Posted March 1, 2002 Alright, help me out with some cheesy 80 songs that have been covered since the 80's whether you like em or not. I'm thinking... Reel Big Fish - Take on Me Marilyn Manson - Sweet Dreams Dope - You Spin Me Round Shades Apart - Tainted Love Limp Bizkit - Faith Orgy - Blue Monday Me First + the GGs - Uptown Girl (among others) Thats a start. I know there's got to be more I'm missing. Anyone cover Come on Eileen?
Guest Denny Burkholder Posted March 1, 2002 Report Posted March 1, 2002 Marilyn Manson also covered "Tainted Love" recently. "Come On Eileen" was covered by Save Ferris a few years ago. OMD's "If You Leave" (from the John Hughes movie Pretty in Pink) was covered by Good Charlotte for "Not Another Teen Movie". Also: Smooth Criminal - Alien Ant Farm We're Not Gonna Take It - Biff Naked 99 Red Balloons (Luftballoons)- Goldfinger Somebody's Baby - Phantom Planet
Guest starvenger Posted March 1, 2002 Report Posted March 1, 2002 From what I can remember: It's The End of the World As We Know It - Great Big Sea Run To You - The Rage(?) - it was a dance single Heaven - DJ Sammy(?) - those dance guys seem to like Bryan Adams, I guess. Kiss - Tom Jones and the Art of Noise
Guest areacode212 Posted March 1, 2002 Report Posted March 1, 2002 How weird, I was listening to Orgy's cover of Blue Monday just as I clicked on this thread. Also, there's Oasis's cover of "Cum On Feel the Noize". Though technically, it's not an 80s song (it's by some 70s band called Slade), most people associate it with Quiet Riot. This is a cool thread. Looks like I'll be hopping onto Morpheus soon.
Guest Stupendous Man Posted March 1, 2002 Report Posted March 1, 2002 Less Than Jake did a cover of Tommy Tutone's Jenny (867-5309)
Guest Clyde Rockwell Posted March 1, 2002 Report Posted March 1, 2002 Reel Big Fish - Hungry Like The Wolf (Duran Duran) Living End - Tainted Love (Soft Cell) New Found Glory - Good Enough (Theme From The Goonies) Powerman 5000 - Relax (Frankie Goes To Hollywood) Fear Factory & Gary Numan - Cars (Gary Numan) Living End - Girls On Film (Duran Duran) Unwritten Law - Goody Two Shoes(Adam Ant) 88 Fingers Louie & Against All Authority - Walk Like An Egyptian (Bengals sp?) That's all I can think of right now
Guest saturnmark4life Posted March 1, 2002 Report Posted March 1, 2002 If you type in punk covers on AG or whatever you'll get a nice selection. Good ones are ghostbusters, country roads (gimme gimmes) and Goldfinger's versions of 99 red balloons and Rio.
Guest Scott Michaels Posted March 1, 2002 Report Posted March 1, 2002 'Glory of Love' (theme from Karate Kid II) by Peter Cetera was covered by New Found Glory. Disturbed did that awesome cover of 'Shout' by Tears for Fears. Godhead covered 'Eleanor Rigby' although that isn't really 80's.
Guest oldschoolwrestling Posted March 1, 2002 Report Posted March 1, 2002 Love You Down Time After Time Ring My Bell All covered by INOJ
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Posted March 1, 2002 Report Posted March 1, 2002 Coal Chamber f/ Ozzy Osbourne - "Shock The Monkey" (originally by Peter Gabrielle, I believe) Godhead's "Eleanor Rigby" cover is 60's... And wasn't MJ's "Smooth Criminal" released in 90 or 91? And saturnmark, is that "Ghostbusters" cover you're referring to by a ska band? If so, it kicks major amounts of ass.
Guest converge241 Posted March 2, 2002 Report Posted March 2, 2002 Marilyn Manson "Tainted Love" Machine Head "Message In A Bottle" Nine Inch Nails "physical" Gravity kills "personal Jesus" side note: best cover song ever Powerman 5000 "Army Of Me" by Bjork ((not 80's but had to throw that in))
Guest saturnmark4life Posted March 3, 2002 Report Posted March 3, 2002 That ska version of ghostbusters does rule - who the hell is it?
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Posted March 3, 2002 Report Posted March 3, 2002 I dunno who does it. I'm not big on ska (just don't know any ska bands aside from No Doubt, Reel Big Fish, and The Bosstones {aren't they skacore?}).
Guest mw679 Posted March 3, 2002 Report Posted March 3, 2002 Buckcherry covered Anything, Anything. Not sure the name of the original band but Buckcherry's cover is on the Road Trip soundtrack. Laz- Smooth Criminal is off of MJ's "Bad" album, which was released in 1987. Buckcherry also covered Janet Jackson's "Nasty". They performed it on the Janet tribute on MTV a little while back. Not sure if it was ever recorded in the studio, but I'd guess that would count.
Guest Zack Malibu Posted March 4, 2002 Report Posted March 4, 2002 If anyone is into dance/techno/freestyle, there are covers of "Careless Whisper", "Sunglasses At Night" "Shadows Of The Night", "Can't We Try" and "Seperate Ways" that I know of. Speaking of Careless Whisper, it seems EVERYONE has covered that song. Barenaked Ladies did it live in concert a few times (got it off of Morpheus), Tamia did an R&B version, and Dave Koz (saxaphone player) did it with Montell Jordan on vocals. There are a lot of punk covers out there of Duran Duran, even the early 1990's "Ordinary World" and "Come Undone". Goldfinger does a "Rio" cover. New Found Glory covered Warrant's "Heaven" Mariah Carey did Phil Collins' "Against All Odds" and Journey's "Open Arms" I know that I have more, I just have to think of them.
Guest starvenger Posted March 5, 2002 Report Posted March 5, 2002 >Speaking of Careless Whisper, it seems EVERYONE has covered that song. Barenaked Ladies did it live in concert a few times (got it off of Morpheus) Which reminds me - BNL did a cover of "Fight The Power". It's on the Yellow Album and on either the "Brain Candy" or "Coneheads" soundtrack. >Mariah Carey did Phil Collins' "Against All Odds" and Journey's "Open Arms" My friend's a diehard Journey fan (why, I dunno. He get's ripped about that every day at work), but even he'd draw the line at a Carey cover of it.
