Guest Edwin MacPhisto Report post Posted October 9, 2002 ...with Yankee Hotel Foxtrot for my top of the year honors thus far. I heard Turn On The Bright Lights in Tower Records on Friday, raised an eyebrow in interest, picked it up at Virgin on Sunday, and after a few runthroughs, have become totally hooked. Everyone's compared them to Joy Division so far, and that works, but there's a lot more guitar here and some excellent, excellent rhythms. It's not quite like anything I've heard before, and I'm liking it muchly. The album constantly swells, builds, rises and falls, has some twisted New York poetry and delivery...this album's really all over the place, but so well-contained that it works. Half the tracks feel like minor epics, and the others hold it all together quite well. Only a bit of time will tell if it lasts as well as YHF has over the last few months, but I've got a good feeling. "Obstacle 1," "The New," and "Stella was a diver and she was always down" recommended especially. Anyone else snag this little jewel yet?
