Guest jester Report post Posted October 9, 2002 Is it just me, or does WWE not have a single worthy belt right now? Through bad booking, angles, an emphasis on soap opera crap and quite probably dirty politicking, it seems to me that each and every belt is majorly tainted in some way. And I'm not talking about tainted in a heel-cheated-to-become-champ way. I mean tainted in an A-hobo-wouldn't-use-this-piece-of-shit-belt-to-hold-up-his-pants way. Break it down: Women's Title: Trish Stratus I don't think is a bad champion, but she's got the belt mostly because there's no-one else to give it to. It's either her or Molly. Victoria looks promising, but the entire division is treated like a joke. The belt was last defended in a bra and panties paddle on a pole match. How can you possibly take a belt like that seriously? I really don't think the T&A matches do anything for the ratings, either. Crowds are usually dead for them, plus the "wrestling" is so lousy that exposes the business. Yeah yeah, we all know it's fake, but we like to pretend it isn't and anything that spoils the illusion sucks. Cruiserweight Title: The current champ, Jamie Knoble, has held on to it for awhile, so that's a start. But WWE treats this division like something it tolerates, not wants to grow. They don't want to build more than one credible heel or face challenger, and they are not afraid to feed these guys to waste-of-time players like Mark Henry. With effort, this belt could be seen as a much bigger deal. I can't wait to read the next Ross report about how the cruiser division is really coming along and that they are going to do more with it, and then see a yet another Knoble/Nidia/Kidman/someone else useless tag team combo. Intercontinental Title: This one kept going up and down. Currently, it's way down. After Jericho had barely tightened it around his waist with the promise of maybe building him and the belt up again, it was ripped off and put on Kane in the name of his big push. Will likely be absorbed into the fed's most useless belt, which is: Raw World Heavyweight Title: We've gone over why this belt is useless many times. But to recap: 1. We just saw the titles unified. A significant focus of the company for months has just been undone, showing that WWE has no long range planning ability. 2. If you're going to make a belt something wrestlers believably want, you make them earn it. If you want to make it look like a meaningless egostroke title for an undeserving heel, like Dibiase's Million Dollar Belt, you give it to him. 3. They recycled a belt already unified into another belt. Could they not have made a new one? 4. The belt is usually defended in the first hour of the show against non-main eventers like Spike Dudley, further making it look unworthy of the spotlight 5. The belt is around the waist of HHH, who many smarks are sick of seeing in any way, shape or form. Raw Tag Team Titles: Another recent victim of revolving championships and contenders thrown together for the hell of it, these belts can now be won by a single person. Kane not only defeated two Unamericans solo, he defended them in the TLC match solo too. Soon, HHH will be defeating the guy that did all this too. The entire division (what little there is of it) is laughable. Smackdown Tag Team Titles: Too early to tell where this will go. If the other titles are any indication, WWE will probably do something really stupid, like make Rikishi the sole Smackdown tag team champion. (SmackDown!) World Heavyweight Title: IMO, Brock's reign is being handled worse than Jericho's. He's a monster heel that sells for the Hardy Boys, for God's sake. Just as they are trying to get him over as a champ, they created the "new" belt, making him look like a loser wearing a diluted belt (if they were going to make two champ belts, which I still think they should not have done, they should have done it when Rock was champion, since his heat is safer). They also have Brock defending the belt early in the show against non-main eventers, making it look even less worthy. What I gather from all this is that the WWE has become so bad that it has to work hard to make ANY of its belts look worth winning. As it stands now, no wonder there's more soap opera antics going on. Why would the wrestlers want the belts? So like, discuss and such.
Guest oldschoolwrestling Report post Posted October 9, 2002 Remember when Knoble first started and then won the belt how over he made himself and the belt by saying it was their (he and Nidia's) way out of the trailer park and he would do whatever to keep the title? He made people care about him and the belt and understand where he was coming from. Since then? He has had very little mic time, the title has rarely been defended, and Nidia gets more tv time than him. F the pregnancy/stalker/murder angles and make people care about chasing the belts. Yeah, that was a good angle. It gave Knoble motivation and it made the belt look worth something. When was the last time there was a good angle around a belt? Guest Trivia247 Report post Posted October 9, 2002 and what we hear now, Rey Mystero won;t be pushed as a cruiserrweight but as a heavyweight They said in a WWE.com interview with him asking him if he wanted to be World Champion. So Rey the Prince of the Cruiserweights Won't be doing Cruiserweight wrestling...OOOO GOOODY
Guest Midnight Express83 Report post Posted October 9, 2002 all belts are meaningless for a reason. There are too many of them. And the fact that they aren't defend to the right people. HHH defending his title to Spike Dudley and Buh Buh won't make it good. Beating Booker will. Brock is a joke and I don't care because they put themselves in that hole. Guest Smark Hammill Report post Posted October 9, 2002 You know why the belts are tainted? Because they aren't earned. I have watched wresting for 20 years, and I have never gotten really excited about feuds over a belt that is meaningless. Feuds based on hatred, jealousy, etc. are better, IMO. So, in your view the belts will always be meaningless, no matter what?
Guest Brian Report post Posted October 9, 2002 Belts are just fodder and props. The only belt that ever had any value in the promotion is the world championship, the final stepping stone, the number one person in the company, but even then it was still the top prize in the game. And what do you earn by winning it? See the problem.
Guest oldschoolwrestling Report post Posted October 9, 2002 I've been watching NWA tv from 1985 these past few weeks. Watching Flair's interviews where he talks about what the belt means shows you the difference between then (when the belt meant something) and now (when the belts are worthless). Guest FeArHaVoC Report post Posted October 9, 2002 Reasons like this is why Wrestlers don't take what "smart marks" have to say seriously. Who are we to say those belts don't mean anything? There is a Hell of a lot of talent in that Locker Room who would love to carry those titles. It's more TV time, it's respect, and it's more Pay and maybe a stepping stone to a higher spot on the card where the pay is even better. Or at least Should be. There is a lot of younger guys who grew up watching WWF and dreamed of holding those titles. Many of those guys deserve to hold titles for their hard work. Not their fault The McMahon's, Writers, and whom ever else back there with stroke killed the titles Legacy.
Guest jester Report post Posted October 9, 2002 I think the belts can and should mean something...but they don't. And if I were a wrestler in WWE I'd be thrilled if I found out I was getting a title run, even now. But I'd probably be a little disappointed that the belts aren't so impressive these days.
