I like how BretHart4Ever does his banners. It's very arty, believe it or not. I was a big fan of the one he had for a long time, the one of Kurt turned backwards toward his pyro. The lighting on the picture was great anyway, and the subtle name at the bottom left made it good.

Actually, the more time you spend on a banner, the better it looks. I'm not saying his banners look shitty, or that I don't like them, because I do like them. It's just that pretty much anyone can take a pic, and place it on a 500 x 200 banner and add text. It's not really that hard. Also, I don't spend alot of time on my banners, and they suck. Therefore, that must mean if I spent more time on my banners, they might look better.

Here's a tip.

 

A 5 minute banner can look ten times better than a 4 hour one. It's all how it's done. Personally, I like BretHart4Ever's. Simply done, but it looks nice.

 

Learn from that.

 

All the Photoshop filters on earth can't save a banner that's ugly.

I agree that Bret's are very arty, having a good quality picture with great lighting effects (Like the Angle One) With the subtle name down the bottom is extremely effective.
