Washington Wizards General Manager Wes Unseld announced today that the team has signed veteran power forward Charles Oakley to a one-year contract. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Oakley is entering his 18th NBA season and has career averages of 10.0 points and 9.8 rebounds per game.

“Charles Oakley gives us a tough veteran presence in the front court,” said Unseld. “He also brings a wealth of knowledge and experience that will help our young big men.”

Oakley began his career with Michael Jordan as a member of the Chicago Bulls from 1986-1988, two years of which he was coached by Wizards head coach Doug Collins. A trade to New York in 1989 teamed Oakley with Wizards assistant coach Patrick Ewing for 10 seasons. Oakley was then traded to Toronto following the 1998 season and played there for three seasons before returning to Chicago last year.

Oakley has averaged a double-double in points and rebounds in six of his 17 NBA seasons. He has played in 1,233 career games and in 144 playoff games. Oakley played in the 1994 NBA Finals with the New York Knicks.
