I saw a pretty cool mod recently and I'm thinking of trying to run two USB cables powering two case fans each, with switches and LEDs affixed to each one. They normally run off the 12v power supply via standard 4-pin MOLEX and I want to make sure I'm not going to fry my mobo doing this.
Guest I'm That Damn Zzzzz Posted October 13, 2002 Report Posted October 13, 2002 The USB port is supposed to supply 500 mA power @ 5 volts, that includes all devices running off it. I'm guessing 12 v fans won't like the reduced voltage or draw too much power.
Guest Ace309 Posted October 13, 2002 Report Posted October 13, 2002 Yeah, I just realized that when I dug a little deeper and found that it is, in fact, a 5v and not a 12v line. Colour me disappointed.
