Soap opera storylines in wrestling

Recommended Posts

Like most people, my initial reaction when I read about Vince McMahon's decision to do more soap opera-like storylines was negative. But when you think about it, there are some dramatic-type angles that can work. The problem is that WWE is choosing to go with RETARDED soap opera stories, not that they're going with soap opera stories perid. For example...

Vince and his ungrateful kids -- Good in small doses.

Spike and Molly Holly -- Good.

Latino Heat and Chyna -- Good.

Val Venis and other guys' wives -- Goofy but decent.

Angle, Stephanie, Triple H -- Good.

Stalking Undertaker's wife -- Mmm...decent.

Undertaker has a brother named Kane -- Good for the time.

Kane's dad is Paul Bearer -- Bad.

Kane is a murderer -- Really bad.

Soap opera angles are not all bad.

Having writers that can't write soap opera angles writing said soap opera angles is very very bad.

The only soap opera storyline that I liked was the HHH/Stephanie marriage. At times it was pretty funny, especially towards the end of their marriage, and between No Way Out and Wrestlemania 18.

The greatest storyline of all time was King Mabel's Royal Plan. No argument necessary.

Don't forget Triple H/Stephanie's Wedding Renewals...which ended up kind of...bland.

Sure, for midcard feuds that don't have titles involved, but not for the fucking MAIN EVENT ANGLES!!!

How about making the titles worth a damn? Worked before.

Soapish angles are often what makes for dynamic television, and good matches and good PPV's are the payoff, so in many cases, those types of storylines are good.

HOWEVER...

This week, the WWE went fucking apeshit with the soap opera angles, and in case nobody has noticed, they're ALL THE SAME EXACT STORYLINE.

Heel says babyface did something bad in the past. Mindgames ensue. FUCK THIS. It's like Vince scribbled a vague concept on a napkin one day, and the writers said, "Hey, we can support three fueds simultaneously with that one storyline! Three birds with one stone!"

It's ridiculous how uncreative the current crop of writers are. They're just a bunch of fucking hacks, and they're ruining the product. If it wasn't for the good matches on Smackdown and Bischoff on Raw (that's performers taking credit, not writing), WWE television would be beyond mediocre.

And JR wonders why Austin left.

The only good Soap Opera angle that had a good blow off was Savage and Liz from 1989 to 1991.

Good Soap Opera Angles:

Savage/Flair

UT/Kane

Bret/Shawn (Sunny days etc.)

Austin/Mchahon

Kane's angle is SO MUCH worse than any of these

The problem is not with the Kane angle itself. THe problem comes from the fact that the angle involves characters no one cares about (HHH, Kane).

Not for nothing, but Kane's delivery of his soliloquy was beyond bad. He just can't act.

It's funny... SKeith once outlined a comparison between wCw and WWF wrestlers during the Monday Night Wars: wCw guys were wrestlers who could act, and the WWF guys were actors who could wrestler. It just seemed that no matter how much the wCw guys outwrestled the WWF, guys like Austin and the Rock made you buy into their stories so much so that it really enhanced the actual matches. It made you want to see the storylines through to the end. It also helped that the writers were really on the ball.

Now it seems that the Usual Suspects can't act or wrestle, and the monkeys with the typewriters are picking nits off of each other...

Yes I did watch Passions for a while, but when I heard the actor died of some mysterious means, I quit watching. Really who cares about the old witch Tabitha without the living doll TIMMY!!!!!!!!!

ok daytime rant over

It seems that the best acting wrestlers either quit WWE or found something else to do.

1. Rock is a Hollywood Action Hero

2. Steve Austin gets drunk alot now - his Mad Tv and Nash Bridges stuff is classic

3. Randy Savage did Spiderman and voice overs for Cartoon Network

4. Hogan is watching reruns of Thunder in Paradise and Rocky 3 on TNT
