The slow push

Recommended Posts

Guest bps "The Truth" 21

There used to be such a thing as a slow push to the top.

Bret Hart and Shawn Micheals are great examples.

They spent time as tag wrestlers...then IC champs...then Main Evented.

Guys like the Rock and Angle sped up that process considerably.

It appears that the WWF is intent on giving Edge a Hart/Micheals style push.

Who do you think should get one?

Several people are already ruined by constant start and stop pushes...but:

RVD

Christian

Lance Storm

Kanyon

and

Mike Awesome

could all fit the bill

Who would you like to see get the slow (and more meaningful) push to the top?

I think Jericho got the slow push...even if it was a relatively quick slow push. I vote Rhyno.

(or Hugh Morris but no one ever agrees with me. j/k)

I think this kind of push would fit Lance Storm like a glove.  We know he can work great in a tag team, and I know he could do well with a nice long IC title run after that.  And since he has been jobbed a lot, he could use a nice long gradual push to give him some credibility.

I think that this would benefit Storm most of all.

RVD has the kind of popularity that a fast push would seem more likely.

I'd go with Mike Awesome.  The man is big, strong but can fly thru the air like a cruiserweight. When he won the ECW title, i thought he was a joke, but he actually showed some promise.

They really need to do something with him. Put him in the hardcore division, I think he'd make an interesting hardcore champ. And...........

I agree with the comments on Mike Awesome.  He is very talented in the ring, can fly like a cruiserweight at times, and has about 495 different powerbomb variations that he can beat you with.  I would like to see him get a real nice push upon return.

Tommy Dreamer too.

Who better than Kanyon?  I think Kanyon is the most talented of the WCWers.  I've not been really impressed with Storm yet and I haven't seen enough of Awesome to make a critique of him.

Mike Awesome I think could get over with a faster push.  He is a monster.  Fans will have no problem believing he can beat people.

Kanyon's a great choice too.

Rhyno and Storm would probably be the most likely candidates for a slow push, because they have recieved very little exposure (Rhyno because he's been out for months upon and months, and Storm because he hasn't had any feuds or storylines). Everyone else has received at least some exposure, and would probably get a bit of a faster push.

I kind of touched upon this in another thread. I think the wwf should just go the slow push generally for the wrestlers. The Rock got the slow push believe it or not. He came into the wwf as a prospect under his family legacy. He won his first match, but didn't go on a winning streak. He won the I-C title basically on a rookie fluke 3 months later. Something like Maven with the hardcore title. He lost the title 2 months later. He came back and slowly worked to the title in December 1997. He never even won the title in the ring. He slowly had to prove he deserved the title being "given" to him and had it for about 8-9 months. That's a slow build. Under old wwf philosophy he would become the #1 contender since he was the #2 champion. He entered the tourney and won the title. It was a slow build.

Angle is a different story. None of the titles he won he wore too long. The only exception is that he never got pinned for the I-C and Euro title which works in his favour.

Anyways, the topic at hand. You saw Rock's paragrph above right? Give it to RVD and the same path can happen with him being a serious top contender for the wwf title by next year.

Storm would benefit the Euro title with a slow push. Canada is a commonwealth country under the Queen. Let him run a gimmick on that and perform some solid matches.

Rhyno as well but I'm thinking he'll get pushed similarly to how he did in his first WWF run and there was nothing slow about that push.  He's got what it takes though.  Mike Awesome is another guy who could be pushed very quickly as a monster and would probably be able to get over.  Unless the WWF makes him chase fat chicks, or live in the 70's.

I'd agree with all those choices.

I'd most like Shane Helms to get a push (not as Hurricane). I think he has so much potential. A CW title run followed by a gradual push up the ranks might work.

As he is prob too small for Vince, Rhyno or Awesome (good tag team?) would be my prefered big men.

Rhyno, Storm and Kanyon would be my choices to receive slow pushes. All of them could make the most of it, and a gradual push up the card could definately lead to future success for them.
