What will be the next fad in modern rock?

Since rock music pretty much sinks into some desperate cycle every so often, with a few bands coming out that sound a little different and go platinum, inviting a footrace of bands to try to follow the same formula, my question to you is this: what will the next big sound be like?

 

Some notable cases where this happened:

 

Hair bands. Everyone still remembers Motley Crue and Def Leppard, but what of the Bulletboys, Kix, Vixen, Axe, and Saigon Kick?

 

Nu Metal. Korn, Coal Chamber and Slipknot sell crazy amounts of CDs, and we get more of their crap, combined with Neurotica, Puddle of Mudd, Soil, and Linkin Park. Most of that list will be forgotten in 10 years.

 

That rap/rock frenzy. Rage Against The Machine is still enjoyed by many, but the rest of the genre totally crashed and burned. Limp Bizkit is, well, Limp Bizkit, and the rest of that sound has pretty much faded into obscurity.

 

Those weird moments when a lot of rock bands got into totally different genres. F'rinstance, the whole swing jazz mess that was around for a few months, and the semi-techno craze before it. Prodigy, Rammstein, Stabbing Westward, and bands like Marilyn Manson and Smashing Pumpkins put out material with a bunch of sampling and synth.

 

Now there's the neo garage scene, which doesn't look like it will have a long shelflife, and nu metal being really stagnant and dull, so there's bound to be something else coming out pretty soon.

 

I think it's going to be really happy shit. Kind of like hair bands, only without spandex and booze.

It's difficult to predict. I could be cheeky and say something like "disco polka," but, in all honesty, one rarely--if ever--knows what the next fad will be. I would have never expected the White Stripes to find mainstream success, and start a mini-revolution in the modern rock scene. Who knows what the future holds?

Hopefully, We'll see a return of Hard Metal...Disturbed is at the forefront for that.

Uh, one of these is not like the other. Dashboard is about as un-rough/garagetastic as you can get.

 

I personally don't think that too many of the "garage" type bands are going to have much shelf life either--at least not when it comes time to deliver the next album. The White Stripes will probably be okay for a while because they've got a really varied sound that appeals to a pretty wide base of fans. I think the Hives are a one-trick pony, though, as much as I like their slick, crunchy stuff. If the Hives--or the Strokes, for that matter--deliver a next album pretty much identical to the first, they're not going to do all that well, and I won't care.

 

Basically, if any of these bands are going to have continued success, they need to evolve out of the garage-revival pretty substantially. I'll be watching for when the second Strokes' album releases, and that'll probably be a fair sign of things to come. Has anyone heard any of the new songs?

i like the vines/strokes/hives, but they are just a fad. The hives are just a fun gimmick band, but the strokes CD is a damn good album, which is overlooked most of the time. I'm sick to death of the white stripes cos i fell asleep at their live show. Sooooo long and monotonous. I really only like one song by the vines, and that's Get Free, none of these bands can live up to the vomitous hype, but they are just bands.

My greatest fear is that, in a desperate attempt to keep their mainstream fans, the White Stripes recruit studio people notorious for adding the gloss that idiots enjoy so much. It'll end up sounding like a mix between the last two Weezer records and Kingdome Come. That's a recurring nightmare of mine. And I know they've already recorded it, but...it could still be screwed up in the mixing. Keep that goddamn Tom Lord-Alge away from my White Stripes album. If any band involved in the garage revival fad is going to have any longevity, it's them. But I'd rather it be because they're good than because they're collaborating with Justin Timberlake. Ya dig?

 

I agree with whoever said the next rock fad is going to be happy music. It's been threatening to burst onto the scene for some time now, making small gains here and there. The whole things just needs one perfect song for everyone to get behind. And then you can all go back to pretending like you take Andrew WK seriously. *sigh*

I honestly hope we get another wave of Disco. Screw just the fashions sort of coming back or the music being collected in "best of" albums, I mean a full-on revival, with new people making it. That would be so great.

 

That or Techno being even bigger than it was back in 1997. The only problem with this is that I'll have to deal with all the new fanboys who are convinced that someone new is the best ever and I have to show them the golden paths of Digweed, Van Dyk, and such.

I guess MTV-Punk is the next big thing in music.

I hope FLIPP becomes huge one day. Incredibly fun live show, and the music is just a blend of old-school punk rock (think Sex Pistols) and cock rock (KISS). Yes, hard to imagine, but it WORKS.

I'll actually second that mall punk mention, even though it's been steadily building since the rise of Blink 182. It seems like these awful, awful bands are everywhere all of the sudden. They even have a pop musician attempting to cash in on their look and attitude. That's something. You wouldn't know it from listening to my local rock station, however, because they seem to be under the impression that the whole deep-voiced Creed thing is still what's happening, when clearly the restless youth of America has already moved on.

I also agree with the mall punk mention. It seems like something that is starting to become more and more noticeable lately.

 

I would love if disco came back. There is something about music that I can enjoy, but still make fun of that I have always enjoyed. Of course, I just hope the next big trend is some really, horrendously bad music. The kind of music that will experience a terrible backlash after the trend is over. Kind of like disco in the 70s. That would be awesome.

 

I am just glad Korean pop will never become hugely popular in the American mainstream. I am more than content with it just being my own thing, if it became hugely popular, I do not think I would be able to enjoy it as much. Japanese pop might some day experience some popularity though, it seems to be very slowly inching into the American mainstream from what I have seen. I would not mind being able to go to a music store, and pick up a Utada Hikaru CD some day in the future.

that was the style back in the 80s though... when you put the hairstyle in with the times, it doesn't look that bad (although... it is a ridiculous style). Much like today's styles of messy bleached hair is the hip thing. Most likely in ten years, multicolored hair will be a big joke as are mullets today.

I almost kind of wish that Top 40 rock would become so UNPOPULAR, that the radio stations would be forced to try something different, which would be to bring back METAL.....doubt that would happen though as Hard Rock-Nu-style seems to be on a slight upswing.....ugh
