Guest Redhawk Report post Posted October 18, 2002 I've noticed that more than almost any movie, Devil's Advocate with Al Pacino and Keanu Reeves is a "loved it or hated it" film. Everyone I know who's seen it either thinks it's great, or they think it's hideous. In my opinion. Devil's Advocate was one of the better movies I've seen and probably in my Top 5 all-time favorites. But I've also talked to a lot of people who think it's just crap. What side of the fence are you on?
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Report post Posted October 18, 2002 I'm on the side that can ignore Keanu's acting and accept the greatness of Pacino as Lu C. Fer.
Guest WrestlingDeacon Report post Posted October 18, 2002 I liked the film the first time I saw it. Pacino gives a fantstic performance that starts off very subdued and just builds to this wild crescendo. Keanu's usual one note acting really does hurt the movie and someone who could have matched Pacino by starting off sublte and build into a emotionally distraught shell of a man as Al slowly breaks him down at the end would have really added a lot of punch to the movie. I remember thinking, "Al Pacino vs. Keanu Reeves, that's a one punch fight." Someone like Johnny Depp could have added so much here. This is also about the only movie I've liked Chelize Theron in as her performance is very tight and fits the part perfectly. Technically, the special effects are eye popping without over whelming the movie. The direction is unspectacular and just some slight flourishes and grandiose movement would have fit the subject matter better. Overall, I think the movie could have been much more than it turned out to be and that's what might sour a lot of people on it. A great concept with a fantastic peformance by Pacino winds up becoming a middling film based on Reeves' performance and only fair direction. I still enjoy the movie and can sit through it if it comes on television.
Guest LaParkaMarka Report post Posted October 18, 2002 I loved the movie and even picked up the bare-bones dvd. Pacino is absolutely wicked in it, Theron is quite good, and Keanu is...Keanu. If you don't have a problem with him, pick it up...it's very worthy of watching. If only for Pacino's rant at the end.
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted October 19, 2002 I don't hate the movie, but i don't see how it could be one of the best movies that someone has seen. I also can't understand how it could be on someone's "alltime favorite movies" list. Don't get me wrong Pacino's performance was great and all, but the movie it self is very forgettable. Overall It's a mediocre movie with a great performance.
Guest DrTom Report post Posted October 19, 2002 It's not bad, and Pacino fans should certainly see it. However, it's completely forgettable outside of Charlize Theron taking her clothes off. She needs to be in more movies that require very little clothing.
Guest C.H.U.D. Report post Posted October 19, 2002 I loved the movie and even picked up the bare-bones dvd. Bare-bones? The DVD has commentary by the director and over 30 minutes of deleted scenes, as well as a trailer. I'd hardly call that "bare bones".
Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted October 19, 2002 Keanu Reeve's isn't the least bit believable has a lawyer. If an actor isn't believable in the part than I can't really like the movie.
