and i'm absolutely SHOCKED that so few people recognize that 'the bicycle thief' is vastly superior to half the movies on the list, especially that piece of crap by the 'eek the cat' guy.

I mean, come on people! Sixteen Candles?! Now I'm as much of a Molly Ringwald fan as the next guy, but that's ridiculous.

 

I agree with what godthedog is saying, in fact, I'm guilty of it. If it comes down to a movie I haven't seen and another that I have seen, I'll automatically pick the latter.

 

Does anybody else see a problem with Apocalypse Now not being there? 'Cause I do.

 

i hate, hate, hate 'apocalypse now'. however, i understand how loved it is by so many, so it still should've made the list.

don't pick one movie over another just because you haven't seen the other one (unless the one you've seen is one of your favorite movies), it makes no sense.

I'd agree, but if you've never seen the other film, what are you supposed to do? Take someone else's word on it or just not vote?

 

e.g. I'll never be able to afford the OOP 400 Blows Criterion disc (which I've seen go for as high as $200!) and no video stores in my local area have it. Thus, in all likelihood I'll probably never see the film; sure it might be better than 12 Monkeys but I have seen that and I do like that, so does that mean I'm not allowed to vote for that just because I haven't seen 400 Blows?

by voting for '12 monkeys', you're attesting that '12 monkeys' is a better movie. which you can't really do, since you haven't seen 'the 400 blows'. if you just don't vote, you're admitting that you don't know which is better. this way, you can leave it to the people who have seen both movies to decide which is better.

 

doesn't it seem a little strange to judge which movie is better out of 2, when you've only seen one? i've seen 'searching for bobby fischer', but i haven't seen 'the searchers'. maybe 'searching for bobby fischer' is better, maybe it isn't. wrestlingdeacon has and, no matter what his taste is, he's in a better position to judge which is better. i sure as hell have no right to say which is better.

 

if there's a hollywood video in your area, they tend to have great foreign sections, and 'the 400 blows' is one of the 20 or so essential foreign films in almost any given video store. aside from blockbuster, any video store that has more than one rack of foreign films should have it.
