Why isn't the great Papacita ever on AIM? I want to talk to the genius!

I'm hosting it on my RanchoWeb account now, so you can delete it from yours if you wish.

It's so cool.. I'm almost want to turn signatures on so that I may look at it after every post.

I accidentally uninstalled AIM a couple of weeks ago, so I'm usually on my AOL name bombsquadpanther.

And thanks for the compliments everybody.

Yeah! Why can't we be as good as you? WHY?!

Ow, my shoulder's too jacked up now to type... Good thing I mostly use my left hand when typing...

Someone should make me a banner of Shane McMahon that says, "Overselling SUCKS".

EDIT: That came out wrong. So.. How long have you been making banners/graphics, Papacita? And will you teach us what you know?

Papacita should start an entire thread giving us other banner makers the secret to making a great banner.

For sure. I've never known how to do super cool text effects like that. Oh hell, I need to get some software... PSP7 can't do that stuff!

(*looks at banner again*)

Man, I love you!

Damn y'all, STOP MAKING ME BLUSH!!!!! :)

Anyway, I've been messing around with graphics since early 98. Before I got Photoshop, I was using a combo of MGI Photosuite and Adobe Photodeluxe 2.0 (I wouldn't recommend either of those programs, BTW).

As for tips...I really don't have any special secrets to making a good banner, but I don't mind doing a tutorial-type thread when I have the time (I might add a tutorial section to my site if I ever get it finished ).

TheArchiteck makes cool banners too.

I think the key to making a good banner isn't so much the number of neat effects you can cram into it, but how creative the design is. You don't really need to download a ton of Photoshop filters, except maybe for Eye Candy and the Kai stuff. All you need is a cool idea.

I'll do a tutorial on the banner I made.

1) I selected half of my pic.

2) I did the black-gray-white color thingy.

3) I blurred a lot.

4) I added some standard text.

It took me like 2 minutes... and I still whooped DJ Jeff's ass.

Also, whenever I see a cool ad in the subway or in a magazine or something, I make a mental note of it, or sketch it or something, as a possible idea for a future banner/web design/whatever. Advertising people get paid lots of money to come up with that stuff, so why not borrow their ideas?

Lately what I've been doing is looking at paintings, book and video covers and even some Television graphics and expanding on those ideas in my banners and what not. Also, aside from the layer style effects in Photoshop, I really don't use too many special filters. The main things I try to pay attention to are placement and composition (trying to make sure that cuts, text and etc. are in their proper place without cluttering and color scheme) and layer blending. You can get a lot of cool effects by playing around with the layer options. You can also get a lot out of simply using the paintbrushes...for example, you can make flaming text by outlining letters with bright yellow paint, adding an orange glow and then using the smudge tool.
