Given that wrestling fans knew that Lawler was the face and Andy was the heel they'd know the whole deal, but usually in these "outsider in wrestling venus" the outsider is presented as a face or neutral by the non-wrestling pop-culture media (Thats how Rodman and Tyson were portrayed by the outside media (well Tyson's turn wasn't covered) so the question is, was Lawler looked upon as a bad-guy wrestler because of the piledriver (hence deserving the COFFEE SPILL OF DOOM) or did they accurately played up the fact that Andy was the instigator in the feud? Just curious Steve

He would frequently insult Memphis and its fans, emphasizing that he was from Hollywood instead of a shitty place like "Maym-fiss, Tay-nuh-say!" Lawler would come out and defend his city and its fans, and was way over as a face in their little worked feud.
Guest MarvinisaLunatic Posted October 21, 2002 Report Posted October 21, 2002 You need to watch the Andy Kaufman wrestling special that airs occasionally on Comedy Central as opposed to the movie. The Wrestling Women thing on TV (He did it once on SNL) made him one of the most hated people on Television. It was really controversial at the time, although now it wouldn't even garner that much attention. Everyone hated Andy because he went around beating women (sometimes cheating to do so..) and proclaiming himself the Intergender Champion of the World. So when the general public got word that he was wrestling Lawler, a man, everyone wanted to see Lawler kick his ass. The slap on David Lettermans show made the whole situation with Lawler national news, even threatening to sue NBC and then buy NBC and turn it into a 24/7 Wrestling Channel. But the whole wrestling thing caused Andy to be hated even more in Hollywood because they thought he was disgracing Hollywood by using that as the focal point of the fued with Lawler (Hollywood vs Memphis, etc..) You also need to see My Breakfast with Blassie. Its funny at times and its boring at times (Its Andy and Fred Blassie eating breakfast and talking) but its still one of my favorite movies. It was also one of the last things Andy did before he died..

I could just picture Andy taunting Hulk Hogan and siding with Roddy Piper. Piper and Kaufman would've gone together like spaghetti and meatballs

I just saw the movie again the other day, and I have a new appreciation of how bad it was. But at least, for the movie, Lawler regrew his goatee that looked like an ass. The best parts of the movie were with Tony Clifton. Hilarious shit. "It looks like you sat in some cottage cheese. Oh, I'm sorry, that's just your ass."
