the Beatles are a rip-off of every black musician from the 1930s onward who never got credit for their music.

Not really, though you could probably make the case against Elvis, and since the Beatles were pretty much motivated to start recording because of thier love of Elvis you might be able to get them on some sort of transitive property. But it'd be an exercise in futility, I think.

In relation to the original question, I'll never understand the fascination with Hendrix. I can listen to his music and understand that it takes a good deal of expertise to play his songs and that his music was a big step forward for the time, but I can't enjoy it. It does nothing for me. Even the more accessible songs like "Purple Haze" have never worked for me.

Similarly, I can't count how many times I've heard praise for The Doors' "The End" without ever understand the appeal.

....but....I don't like metal, either.

You may want to wait on that "welcome to the fold" thing. :D

Hatred of Metallica makes you ok in my book. I can't stand Ska, but we don't have to trade CDs or anything. Metallica hatred is an ideal that attracts members from all walks of life. Ska kids, Emo kids, Punk rockers, hell, even country fans are at least a little bit ok if they hate metallica.

actually... that'd be Led Zeppelin who reworked old blues standards and most people don't even realize it.

his live stuff is where he shines... supposedly. But I haven't heard any live material from him that makes me believe he is the god all the rockers crack him up to be. He plays with too much noise for my liking as well.

it's all hype... I never really dug the song myself... its only saving grace is the mood set by the musicians of the band.

Nirvana did a funny cover of "the End" and Frank Zappa also ripped it up

I have a strong hatred for Blue Oyster Cult's (Don't Fear) The Reaper... yoy... they need to just stop, and never play that damn song ever again.

yeah, i can see how they totally ripped off 'a day in the life' and 'strawberry fields forever' from leadbelly.

methinks you've watched 'the rutles' too much.

while i don't HATE guns & roses, they get waaaaaaay too much love on this board.

and i can't fucking stand david lee roth. fuck him and his pretty boy showmanship, he has no real vocal or lyrical talent at all. he's just pulled this amazing ruse with his "hey i'm a wacky guy" schtick that it fooled the entire musical world into believing he has talent and was worthy of hanging with a god like eddie van halen.

yeah, some of the musical landscapes in that song are really cool but it's a pretty shallow song. especially lyrically. "the blue bus/is calling us/driver where you taking us"? "ride the snake/ride the snake/to the lake/the ancient lake"? a retarded 12-year-old could write those lyrics.

He was also one of the most charismatic lead singers in the history of rock music. Especially live. His vocal and lyrical talents were all they needed to be, given that he fronted a hard rock band and sang mostly about partying.

Nirvana, I swear to all of you that if Kurt Cobain hadn't died then we wouldn't be singing their praises so much and they'd be just another grunge act that had a few big songs.

And I like DMB :(

And I like DMB :(

you sound so proud of that too...

my problem with them is that they got so big that half of the fanbase is comprised of preppy dipshits who are there to hear the "hits" and get drunk/ stoned. It's just a big party to them with some background music.

same thing happened with Phish unfortunately.

Disliking a band's fanbase is not adequate reason for disliking the band's music. Fortunately, DMB sucks so it's a non-issue.

I guess it's guilt by association... the fans are assholes so... and that's not limited to DMB... a lot of the bands I enjoy have plenty of dipshits at the shows

same way with everyone I know who likes Tool, but I shall check them out anyways someday

Tool is a religious experience live.

As far as David Lee Roth goes, the draw for Van Halen has always been Halen's guitar work, although I do like the Roth material more than the rest. The songs were just better.

I'm one of the few who DOESN'T hate metallica, (ps agent i'm sure country fans dig em these days ;)) and i thought 'load' was very good. Obviously the napster shit makes them assholes. But i don't mind the music. I've never liked Nirvana either, but i appreciate that what they ripped off from the pixies did a lot for music. (I'm sooo bitter)

Oh god and i can't go without mentioning anything by UK Nu-Metal Twats 'A' who have succeeded in becoming the most irratating band on the face of the planet, with HORRIBLE amounts of praise from reviewers. FUCK THEM.

Of course country fans like metallica. Everyone like metallica, because they put out a song in every musical genre they can think of, only watered down. They've been doing that with metal for years, but decided to move on to country with Mama Said, classical with S&M, and now rap with the glorious Ja Rule collaboration. I have a feeling techno is next. Kotzenjunge, beware. They're steadily moving down the food chain of the genre that makes the most money. "Metal" in the 80's. Pop in the 90's, then country, then a staggeringly pretentious orchestra album for mom, and now rap. Metallica goes a-clubbin' in no more than 1 year, mark my words. "I Disappear" was the prototype.

Well i only frowned cos everyone on here was bashing them. And I'm proud to say that I was pissed at the Dave show I went to that saw every single radio song get played. No Warehouse, no watchtower, no dancing nancies, so I'm not one of the big hit fans.

And the smae thing did happen with Phish...:(
